1. Why do y ou call it a "bust"?
Wind damage is part of the problem; flooding is the major issue.

4. Let's see, it was reported as a Catagory 5 yesterday and now it's a 2 and getting weaker?
60mph winds? OK I'll play.

2. I clearly remember the false sense of relief right after Katrina passed over New Orleans
Don't you?

3. No, just because the levees (at the moment) are holding doesn't make it a bust.

It could have been devastating. I'm glad it slowed down to a 2. Hope it drops further, and quickly. This hurricane was a Cat 5 at one point.

Your point is well-taken about how the media is using it, though. But it is better for those in the potential path not to be complacent.

5. The media is playing it up like the 40 day rains are coming
and they get to ignore Labor Day and the Gop hate fest.

6. Not exactly a bust to any who lose their homes, livelihood and lives
Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 09:33 AM by dmordue
and there will be a few regardless if its not Katrina.....

I would rather see the impact over-estimated and lives saved then underestimated and more people dying.

7. Water is overflowing the canal levees in NO as per MSNBC and CNN
I think it is a wait and see situation at least as far as NO is concerned.

8. Umm...it's still early
Plus, I recall when Katrina was poised to hit NOLA it was supposed to be a catastrophe of biblical proportions. But instead it missed New Orleans and after the storm passed I was relieved to see there wasn't that much damage.

And then the levees came down. :(

11. Wasn't Katrina downgraded to a 2 or 3 in retrospect when it hid land?
and I too remember the "we dodged a bullet headline" even while half of NO was under water.

12. That's what they said about Katrina.
Remember, the first few hours after the storm passed, everyone was letting out sighs of relief that New Orleans was mostly intact. It took a little time for the flooding to really hit...

17. I think the comment is really about how it is a "bust" for the media.
There were hoping for devastation to televise. How they love their dirty laundry! I'm pretty certain DB is lifting up best hopes for everyone in Gustav's path. My father is just nw of Houston, and as the big rains and thunderstorms arrive, I'll be checking on him frequently tomorrow. I hope you are okay. Do you still have power this late?
