WaPo: Assessing the Political Impact of Bristol Palin's Pregnancy
Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 01:10 PM by FedUpWithIt All
A few other factors to remember when trying to figure out how this will play out.

* Palin has a VERY strong following among social conservatives who are nearly certain to give her the benefit of the doubt in this situation. She is a known commodity in social conservative circles and is regarded as "one of them" -- a fact that should lessen any criticism from the right.

*

Democrats must be VERY careful not to take a false step here. Some Republicans have already insisted that the Obama campaign is behind the rumor-mongering about Sarah, Bristol and Trig -- although in our experience the campaign has not pushed the story AT ALL, in fact they have been encouraging reporters to focus on the issues of difference between the two candidates rather than personal stories. Any sense that Democrats are pushing this idea will almost certainly turn both Sarah and Bristol Palin into sympathetic figures -- and that spells trouble for her detractors.

The possibility that this issue could paint Obama as a bully that is attacking a sixteen yr old kid for a mistake is one reason we all need to get ABOVE THE FRAY!!! This may be an intriguing turn of events but it may make Palin appear a victim. Be careful.

3. How perfectly republican of them..
1) candidate for veep lies
2) gets caught in perhaps one of many lies
3) curious people online do research that media refused to do
4) it's all somehow Obama's fault?
5) the most strident, judgemental people on earth consider unwed motherhood in republicans, a sacrament
6) in anyone else, a sin punishable by stoning

seems to me it's up to the MEDIA, to not tell us what COULD happen to US, by learning facts, but instead, to actually start REPORTING those facts so we wouldn't HAVE to..

d'ya think??

7. Very careful?
If medical bills were covered by insurance, Palin could be guilty of insurance fraud.

12. If it's her child
insurance will pay for any special care the baby needs. If it's her daughter's it will not. Her insurance doesn't cover grand children.

5. "If they jumped off a bridge would you?"
:eyes:

WE are NOT THEM.

THEY are not like WE are.

THEY hold on to things like talking points FOREVER. THEY forgive ANYTHING for their party, right or wrong. THEY do not let go of an inconsistency or a misunderstanding unless it is THEIR misunderstanding or inconsistency.

WE move on to other things with time and let water pass under the bridge. WE hold our OWN accountable. WE recognize when WE have made an error and adjust accordingly.

8. The votes be damned eh?
Alrighty.

Seeing as Obama is attempting to stand for me, my family and my country i figured the least i could do is attempt to lessen the weapons against him.

The rumor was in play LONG before we here ever heard of it but now that we know it is nothing but a teen pregnancy and knowing FULL WELL that repugs will ignore ANYTHING (Iraq, illegal spying, McCain's affairs...)for their party continuing to harp on this issue will certainly do more harm than good.

But if you must...have at it.

20. As far as one can see a statement has been made, an attempted rebuttal,

which could well be further hypocrisy, another lie.

Where is the incontrovertible evidence?

Sure, though, this one could be left to simmer for a while, while other angles of attack are diligently pursued.

Interesting to observe, though, the kind of material that, for once, does make it into the Corporate Media.

Meanwhile, for example, has WAPO reported or even commented on what's been going down in the Twin Cities (I refer to those outside the convention center), and if so, applying what spin?

15. A family values, abstinence promoting woman has a seventeen
year old daughter pregnant. They are fucking hypocrites who need to be exposed. The only victims here are the millions of teenagers who are not receiving proper birth control instructions thanks to their fucked up asinine policies which their own children do not appear to be following.

Fuck everyone of them and their supporters. They are in no position to judge me.

17. If we want to ensure that our teens have proper options we need to make sure she is not VP
If it is clear that doing what we are is possibly HELPING her we should stop now. Repugs let the leaders that are chosen for them get away with (literally) murder. Pointing out their hypocrisy just makes them bite down harder. I say we destroy her on issues that almost everyone in this country can agree on. The economy, the war... Faced with these issues she will not stand a chance.

19. Be serious. Is that what people here are really talking about? Her stance on education?
Or are we talking about her pregnant daughter. Her daughter being pregnant is NOT EVEN INCONSISTENT with her views on sex ed. She wants parents to be able to decide what their children are taught about sex. Apparently she taught hers that birth control is bad.

What DU is talking about today is the fact that Palin's daughter got pregnant. Sex before marriage is what we are talking about. Is it a hypocritical thing in the Palin family to have a pregnant high schooler in light of their religious beliefs. You betcha. Is that particular hypocrisy going to help or hurt our candidate? If our candidate is hurt by this their views will be further thrust on OUR CHILDREN.
