Best statement yet about Palin:
Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 06:25 PM by proud2Blib
What's galling is this: When the subject is a pregnancy to an unwed, minority teenage mother growing up in some (presumably Democratic) urban area, that pregnancy becomes fodder for lectures from conservatives about bad parenting, the perils of welfare spending and so on. But when the subject is a pregnancy to an unwed, white teenager from some small town in a Republican state, that pregnancy is...a celebration of the wonders of God's magnificence--and choosing life!

34. I think your math is off.
She is 44. Her oldest child is 19. 44-19=25
Her Miss Alaska adventure was in 1984. She was 20. Having a child would have disqualified her immediately. Nude photos might slip by the Miss America folks(this was the year of Vanessa Williams), but I don't think a child would.

Don't confuse the Palins with Cindy McCain's family. It was Cindy who imitated her mother so well.

55. Seconded
Couldn't agree more, and it's a shame she has to go through this on the national stage. I'd rather the pregnant daughter remained out of the spotlight, but when her mother is such a hard-line family-values conservative who promotes abstinence-only sex ed, it unfortunately cannot be ignored.

I only hope both sides and keep the debate away from the girl herself and focused on her mother.

I remember attacks on Chelsea Clinton, the Gore girls and Amy Carter, who were above reproach on these matters, attacked and villified for the way they looked and nobody in the media seemed to feel it necessary to come to their rescue.

14. I'll bet the daughter isn't really pregnant at all
Or maybe she is but isn't as far along as they claim.

I have a feeling that this was just made up to deflect the attention to the mysterious circumstances around Sarah's "pregnancy." Their thinking is probably something like this: "How could I be covering up for my daughter's earlier pregnancy when she's pregnant now? Never mind that her five-month case of 'mono' coincided with my 'pregnancy' which nobody else seemed to notice, not even the flight crew on the eight-hour flight I took back to Alaska after 'my water broke' despite airlines having strict policies about not flying such a person, and I was back at my desk all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed three days after giving birth."

Assuming Palin lasts the week, which is highly doubtful, I expect them to shuffle the "pregnant" daughter out of sight until, "sadly, something goes terribly wrong" and, magically, there is no baby!

for the right wingers I debate online. They are salivating over Palin and all her 'experience'. I am thinking a video of Biden chairing the foreign relations committee versus a video of Sarah chairing a city council meeting should get them all going.

I asked them this question earlier today and they have yet to answer:

I'm asking you to point to a specific single or multiple instances in her short political career that demonstrate she has the mettle and knowledge to handle tricky international affairs.

76. a new term the "Hippocrite" is
someone who pretends to be 'green conscience' but their actions say differently

However Palin doesn't even remotely try to pretend!

She has been an avid moose-hunter since childhood and is still a strong believer in gun ownership.
A considerable amount of her family's income comes from the gas company BP as her husband is an oil production operator for BP..
Palin said that she would sue the Interior Department over its decision to list the polar bear as a threatened species. Her litigation came from fear because Alaska produces fossil fuels, although the wording of the Interior Department decision went to great lengths to ward off any new restrictions on oil and gas drilling.
Palin supports the aerial hunting of wolves and bears
Palin spent $400,000 of state money to fund a media campaign to try and convince Alaskans to support aerial shooting
Sarah Palin opposed a statewide ballot initiative to prohibit or restrict new mining operations that could affect salmon in the state's streams and rivers
She pushed to build a natural-gas pipeline from Alaska's North Slope
She is pushing to open Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling
She has created a committee to forge Alaska's climate-change strategy, and has made Alaska an observer of the Western Climate Initiative
She opposes a windfall profits tax on oil companies
She has a chair on the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission

I was just thinking today:

How appropriate that tragedy should strike and be brewing during the GOP convention. It SHOULD be a somber affair. After all, it's about death and war, fear and prejudice.

I hear part of it is officially to be a sermon for the victims of the storm. Separation of church and state anyone? Let's exploit religion and the storm politically at the same time!!!!

Hey, aren't these storms just punishment for our wicked ways anyway? McCain's pastor Hagee said so!

How many times have we heard about how "liberal permissiveness" was ruining America's kids? Or how many times have we heard them prattle on about Bill Clinton's poor example for America's youth?

61. I'm gonna get all Lakoff about this for a minute.
Lakoff, I'm sure you know, says that people carry two models of the family around in their heads: the "Strict Father" model that predominates in conservatism, and the "Nurturant Parent" model that typifies progressive and liberal attitudes. People have both models in their heads, and what distinguishes liberals from conservatives is which model they apply to which circumstances. When one of the two models is activated, it inhibits the expression of the other model. So conservatives apply the "Strict Father" model when chastising others, but may revert to the Nurturant Parent model when dealing with their own. (Although I bet the "SP" model comes out when they're dealing with that kid in private). Republican empathy doesn't extend very far beyond their own skin.

68. If all of Palin's children were married adults with children of their own,
then Palin would certainly laud them as an example of how well her views on abstinence only works so well combined with her effective parenting. I am not sure why Palin should be exempt from criticism for the opposite result.

of sexually transmitted diseases. The high profile Palin family is legitimizing having unprotected sex by stating how "happy" they are with Bristol's decision. Not one word about protecting the health of teenagers through responsible sexual activity. What kind of leadership is this?

91. This is all too true. . .
and all the more sad for that. Hypocrisy plays a role here also, for it is not true in every
case that the "parenting" of the unwed minority teenager is at fault. Large numbers of inner-city moms
do teach their daughters and warn them, but teens just don't listen.

While some urban mothers do fall down on the job, it is usually the teenage invulnerability syndrome (hormonally based
risk-taking), poor self-esteem and the problem of looking for love
in all of the very wrong places that is usually at fault.

I sincerely hope that this whole miserable story will help to end the mudslinging from every side that
accompanies the issue of teen pregnancy.

105. One of the most accurate and true statement I've ever read...Thanks!!
As someone that has lived for the past 9 years completely surrounded by red states,
I've seen what really agitates these repukes, and I can tell you with 100% certainty
that the baby issue in NOT going to do it. I honestly don't think that there is a
single girl between the ages of 14-19 that doesn't have at least one baby...and the
vast majority of them are mixed-race babies (to piss off their racist parents probably).

However, the AIP issue will agitate the crap out of them. The thought of having someone
in the white house that wanted to succeed from the US, would be completely unthinkable!
They will label her as a traitor and a communist, and never vote for her even if she is
supposedly a die-hard Christian.
...and I already know that they are not crazy about McCain.

So, the bigger we can make the AIP news the better!!

112. But we're better than this...
I agree with Obama... His mother had him at age 18, not sure how old she was when he was conceived...

The point being that it happens with lots of different families, and you're not altogether wrong about how its perceived in the race is different...

........................but in this case, given that its Obama's choice... we're to back off the 17 year old..

With one special needs child already in the home, another baby on the way, a daughter that obviously needed something more than she got from her family, the publicity has been excruciating, I'm sure, and now I hear that the father to be is to appear with the family... just too too much pressure on very very young kids who are being forced through lack of SOMETHING, to parent too early, their lives as kids are over...and the media scrutiny never ending... just when any 17 year old needs privacy and in particular any pregnant 17 year old needs privacy.

So the ultimate question on judgement and family values is: 'WOULD YOU DO THIS TO YOUR DAUGHTER FOR THE VICE PRECIDENCY?'

give me a break.

i feel bad the poor young woman hasta be a part of anything ... but her mother KNEW the risk of it when she took the VP spot. im sorry.

THIS IS an issue because it does show her hypocrisy, and the republican hypocrisy in general... as the OP said... if this was a black 16-17 year old in a large city ... theyd talk about immoral she was and how she wouldnt make a fit parent...

this poor girl in this situation is lucky to have a well off family with the money to support her... others are not so lucky, and they get no praise WHAT SO EVER... only mocking/told they are sinners/ and shunned.

so, screw you.

this has nothing to do with the daughter, it has everything to do with the rights positions ON THE ISSUES her daughter is going through. NOT the daughter herself.

with such a low post count, you have no room to act like ur an obama surrogate.
