The intellectual laziness of many in this country is really starting to wear me out....
Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 09:09 PM by marmar
.... I was talking to a friend of my friend's today, a nice woman and undecided voter, and she went on and on about how she watched Sarah Palin last night, and how impressed she was that she battled pork spending in Alaska, and that she was surprised to find out that Barack Obama planned to raise taxes on middle class people.
Even though my head started to ache, I didn't get frustrated or let my eyes glaze over, and started pointing some facts out to her, and showed her the AP fact-checking story debunking all of Palin's outright lies.
She then said "Oh!" with a dumbfounded look on her face.
I told her that all of the things candidates say can easily be verified or unverified with a simple web search of legitimate neutral sources, not just lefty or righty blogs. She then responded, "Well, I don't really have time for that." {This same woman watches American Idol, all the Nanny shows, The Apprentice and America's Top Model religiously, so I guess she doesn't have the time for anything minor as say an election and the future of the country)

Anyway, hopefully I shedded some new light on things for her. But the level of misinformation, particularly the willful kind, is sad and tragic. I don't know how it was in the last days of Rome, but.......
:nuke:

1. During the 2004 election season
No one in my department of 15 people could name more than two of the Primary candidates, but they could recall all of the winners of Survivor, American Idol, Big Brother, and Amazing Race, back to the beginning of each respective show.

It would be hysterical if it weren't so horrifying.

3. These people know they can go out there and search for facts.

They don't want to because they are lazy yet they find the time to watch shows like American Idol, Reality TV etc.

(I think I said what you said but differently) :hi:

4. Intelligence testing to qualify voters
It's an idea I'm coming closer and closer to supporting.

5. I Understand Your Frustration...
just remember that the AVERAGE I.Q. of the citizenry in this country is around 100, and that there is no test one has to pass in order to be able to vote. The best we can do is just what you did, and make even more "friends", so we can teach them, too! :*

6. Actually
I don't think IQ corresponds with ideology unless we are talking about certain leaders cough Bush cough.... I think people just legitimately view issues differently. I know many smart conservatives. Wrong of course, but smart none the less. And I know a few dumb left leaning people too. Correct politically but dumb.

8. I don't think this woman has a particularly strong ideology one way or the other.....
..... she's just intellectually incurious.

And honestly, if you're clinging to a right-wing ideology at this point, you're either dumb or delusional.

12. I know the feeling...
I'm Building Engineer in a large office park full of college educated people. I've overheard plenty of gushing over Palin. The lack of conscious thought is concerning. I believe we are a Narcissistic society. Working women like what they see in Palin.
