Dell is going to "contract" it's manufacturing now which is another word for "outsource".

I'm not in the market to buy anything right now except food... but that won't always be so. Anyone know if Gateway or anyone else actually builds computers here in the states?

1. There are usually a few firms in any major city...
...who build machines locally. Of course, all the parts are made in China, but at least the final assembly occurs here. These manufacturers tend to be specialty makers of high-end gaming machines, however, so the boxes won't come cheap. I don't know of any national brand that manufactures in the US.

This only applies to desktop machines. If you're after a laptop, then just about every machine in the world is made either in the Perl River Delta or Shanghai. I think one or two companies may still manufacture in Taiwan, but even the Taiwanese guys have moved most of their operations to Mainland China, where wages are lower.

3. There are several here in Austin.
They don't just build high-end machines. I've seen basic machines for about $350 and up, depending on CPU, RAM and hard drive.

4. Interesting. I've never come across domestic manufacturers...
...at the low end of the market. I assume these are desktop PCs?

5. Desktops. Not big outfits-just local businesses.
Hell, I've built systems for people myself and I just run a small repair business out of my garage.

6. I usually build my own machines too, but...
...it's good to see local businesses who can make a go of it in such a competitive market.

2. Dell has done this for years.
There hasn't been a computer manufactured in the U.S. for decades.

If you really want a challenge try to buy a pair of shoes that are NOT made in China.

7. No they've actually had quite a few assembly plants here in the states
Desktops I can build myself, but I'm not touching a "laptop kit" for anything haha.

What a shame that such a revolutionary technology that we invented is now being built in other countries alone :( What a shame :(

10. Digital Storm makes laptops too.
They'll probably be more expensive than something from Best Buy, but they have one that starts at $829. I do not have any experience with their laptops.

8. Check out Digital Storm
Every computer is hand built in the US (California). Now, one must remember that the parts they're built with probably come from Asia, but:

"Our custom computers are hand built by skilled Digital Storm engineers. Our computers are covered with the very best U.S. based technical support directly from the experts who built your system." They have a 3 year warranty with free support.

These are high end systems and probably will cost more than a Dell, but you can't match the quality of a hand-built machine. Their forte is powerful overclocked systems for the serious gamer. You can even get water-cooled towers. However, you can get a home office computer for as low as $602.

We bought 2 of them in February and have had only once had to call support and they have excellent service. This is the fastest most powerful computer I've ever used, and we didn't even get the high end ones! The open architecture design means when you have to upgrade the components inside are easily changed out or added in. Instead of becoming obsolete, you can keep up to date by upgrading as time goes on.

You can buy one of the packages and customize it by adding or removing components to your needs, our start from the ground zero and be completely custom.

9. Apple or PC?
I believe its difficult to find a computer COMPLETELY made in the US, as many of the electronic components are fabricated overseas.
There are ASSEMBLERS of Apples and PCs that are in america.
