NOTE: She wants me to respond and normally I'd be more than happy to (obviously I wouldn't swear or be overly insulting because it's her dad) but I'm just too busy today and I'm leaving for a camping tramp this afternoon. At any rate, if any of you want to take a crack at it, I'd be happy to send her your responses. Otherwise I'll just respond Sunday...but I hate sitting on this stuff. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a response to the Email you sent your mother. First, taxes certainly need to be reduced. However, I distrust Obama's campaign promises. Over the years, these have proved meaningless regardless of which party makes them. The fiscal health of the country depends on the action of both excutive and legislative branches of out government. Second, something needs to be done about health care. In general, health care costs are too high for a number of reasons. The percentage of older people is increasing, and the number of expensive procedures is increasing. Not much can be done about these conditions, but the system is also very confused and inefficient. Something can be done about that. What can be done is a federally mandated system of computerized record keeping, and so called "tort reform". Tort reform means that lawyers will add much less to health care costs. Perhaps you don't fully understand how this works. It is much more than the very high fees lawyers collect from court cases. It extends to the way physicians practice medicine. Too many very expensive tests and exploratory surgeries are ordered by physicians for the sole reason of avoiding being sued. Of course, there needs to be some recourse or overview of bad doctors, but our current situation serves lawyers much better than it does us. Third, increasing corporate taxes is not a substitute for raising taxes on personal income. Corporations will simply increase costs, and thus everthing we buy will cost more. The taxes are still there in a disguised form. Also, such taxes are also a severe handicap to U.S. corporations in competition with foreign companies. Further, high corporate taxes causes businesses move out of the U.S. to countries with lower taxes. For example, Canada, Australia, Brazil, etc. When this happens, the U.S. (we) get absolutely NO taxes. The real solution is to lower taxes AND reduce unnecessary expenses. If you think this cannot be done, take a look at what Sarah Palin did in Alaska. Bush lowered taxes, but did not reduce expenses. This is a big reason for the current economic condition. The very large economic problem we are facing right now is the high cost we are paying for foreign oil. T. Boone Pickens is on the right track. Drilling now will reduce the price of oil NOW. This is because the real cost of oil is highly inflated due to market speculation. With the expectation that the U.S. will be dramatically reducing its demand for oil imports, this speculative bubble will burst. Fourth, McCain was certainly a rascal in college. He graduated fifth from the bottom of his class. However, since then, he has certainly exhibited high character and an ability to think for himself. This cannot be said for BHO. McCain's choice of a VP running mate is evidence of his attitude about the entrenched, hide-bound, good ol' boy Washington crowd and the eastern liberal media. The Washington establishment consists mostly of lawyers (check it out) and either they or their friends make a lot of money with the current system. This system needs to be changed. It will take the likes of McCain and Palin to get this done. BHO is simply an eloquent, air headed, proponent for this existing establishment. This is verifiable. BHO has done nothing either in the Illinois State legislature or Congress. His sole effort has been running for president. His lack of positive character and significant evidence of questionable motive from past associations and current statements makes it very difficult to believe that he can or will deliver on his promises. (He has promised everything to everybody) What it will take to actually get something done is leadership that will come down hard on the Congressional mob. McCain may do it, and it looks like Sarah Palin would enjoy doing it. BHO will certainly not do it because he has no idea of how or why it needs to be done. I hope this clears up a few issues. It is offered in your best interest. This is an important time in our history. The U.S. is falling behind many countries in many areas, and our fiscal status is in a very precarious condition in relation to other countries. The glorious hype and obvious acceptance of BHO by so many people is scary. It reminds me of how Hitler came to power in 1930's Germany. He was an eloquent speaker of questionable motives. Be warned!
