Every DUer should be able to answer: Name the most SOCIALISTIC STATE in this country.
You know.....the one that SHARES certain revenues with every citizen of that state for the common good in that state.

Come on, DU...let's see every one of you score perfectly on this. Especially since I am quite certain most Republicans at that convention would FAIL....BIGTIME.

36. name another state that puts up with this shit:
Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 06:34 PM by roguevalley
hundreds of villages with no roads.
hundreds of villages with no sewer system- pouring poo into a lagoon is what they are forced to do.
hepatitis and tb are epidemic in some places.

name a state with fewer roads and infrastructure

Name a state that no one gave a damn about until oil was found.

name a state with as many provisions in their constitution for their people as alaska

name a state smart enough to set aside land for the vulnerable so that their needs could be taken care of -- trust lands

name a state that was SMART ENOUGH to work out a way to put their resource income into a fund that not only is for the future but pays dividends to the people who live there to help them get along because:

everything is shipped in... food, clothing, widgets, doo-dads, everything.

food in some villages costs four times what you pay now.

Milk in Barrow tops eight dollars. The villages have the highest fuel costs in America.

It costs some villages $2100.00 a month to heat their houses. Each.

Alaska is wonderful, filled with wonderful far-sighted people. We are going to be fifty years old next year and we've done damned good. Hate Palin, leave the rest of us alone.

Socialist? If taking care of your people with a bit of the surplus is that, then good. By the by, the dividend pays each alaskan 2069$ and add a 1200$ energy dividend to help with heating and we are doing pretty good for a while. Remember, we pay taxes on that money.

That makes it #3 in money received from the Federal Government.

I find it somewhat amusing when from a Republican point of view it's perfectly fine for them to get a check but the rest of us shouldn't.

Plenty of red states who always claim to be so self sufficient also get a lot more money from the federal government than they pay in taxes. But somehow they don't see it as unfair when it benefits them

8. Palin - like CHAVEZ - distributes oil wealth to the citizens.
Difference is:

Palin taxes oil profits of corporations, who still make a killing on it. She cuts checks directly to the citizens in order to score political points.

Chavez considers oil a state resource and uses money from its sale to help the citizens indirectly by funding roads, literacy, clinics, etc.

11. I always thought it was a great thing, actually.
The idea that the citizens of a state have a stake in its natural resources makes sense.

However... it's pretty easy to see how the loyalty of citizens can be bought off with a check.

When socialism fails, it's because people are greedy and corrupt.

I credit our state's founding fathers with writing a really wonderful Constitution which made this an "owner state," and then the late Governor Jay Hammond, Dave Rose, Hugh Malone and others who devised the Alaska Permanent Fund before the first drop of oil flowed. It was a stroke of genius.

46. Rogue, several years ago
I hooked up with a woman who had lived here since before the earthquake, who was working on a book about the early days of Alaskan statehood and the genesis of the permanent fund. She had done extensive armchair interviews with Jay Hammond, Dave Rose, Hugh Malone and several others which I transcribed for her. It was fascinating...I felt like I was really getting to know these people aside from what we read in the paper. I was always a big Jay Hammond fan anyway (one of the few Republicans I really respected) and these interviews just confirmed what I already knew.

Unfortunately the woman, whose name I don't even remember now, passed away before she had a chance to write her book, but I'm pretty sure I still have the interviews on a floppy disk around here somewhere (which I can't even open on my computer anymore). Those guys really were ahead of their time.

39. This is how a phrased it to my mother
She's a conservative independent. I said, Alaska gets more federal dollars per capita than 48 other states. Yet, they pay no state sales tax, and every citizen gets a dividend check from the oil sales. Alaska gets $1.89 for every $1.00 they pay in federal taxes. In other words, they would rather spend YOUR money than theirs.

It isn't the point of this thread. The point is, Sarah Palin is running on a reformer, anti-earmark, financial guru, and it's the hypocracy of that. She's lying. This point will get it across to a big segment of independents and moderate republicans. In other words, her actions are far from her rhetoric and people need to know that.
