Now this is the oddest thing about Ms. Palin being a "Beauty Queen"
Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 04:51 PM by ThomWV
I asked the question a little while ago if Ms. Palin had ever actually won a beauty contest. The question was prompted by seeing her called a "Beauty Queen" on the CNN webpage. Someone responded that she had been Miss Wasilla in 1984 and had gone on to 2nd place in the Miss Alaska contest. So, I thought that was nice and so I went to Google and sure enough there were a bunch of references to the event. But the more I looked at the sources the more I realized that none of them was at all authoritative, they were all things like Wickopedia or echos from there. I could not find any pictures from the 1984 contest, any list of contestants, nothing. So, and this is what struck me as odd, I simply started looking to see who was Miss Wasilla in other years, 1983 (the year before Ms. Palin), 1985, 1986. Nothing. I could not find any hint that there had even been a contest in any other year. In fact the only reference I can find to there having been a Miss Wasilla contest in 1984 are ones saying Ms. Palin won and not a thing more about it. How odd. I could go back all the way to 1971 and find out who every Ms. Ratshole was but maybe the Miss Wasilla was a 1-year-only deal. Or maybe I just don't know enough about internet searching. Anyone knows better I'm prepared to be educated.

3. I checked Wikip*dia's links and none of them are first-hand accounts of the pageant.
Looks like you may have caught Failin' Palin in another lie.

14. It could be on microfiche in the local library.
Apparently that's why the McCain campaign didn't really vet her because it would have been too obvious for his staffers to be seen at the library.

15. i can find info on 2003 Miss Wasilla:
http://www.missamerica.org/competition-info/state-contestants.aspx?state=Alaska&year=2003&GO=GO%21

on the other years they either have no listing or just generic titles like "Miss Alaska 8"

19. I believe you have a picture of her in the Miss Alaska Pagent
I get the feeling she simply named hereself Miss Wasilla and went to Nome or wherever they held the big contest and said here I am, let me in. I can't find anything that says there ever actually was a Miss Wasilla contest, not in 1984 or in any other year. But of course lack of evidence is proof of nothing. I'm just wondering if there might be another way to find out if such a contest ever actually took place.

20. I can't believe people are wasting time on this
The GOP throws you a shiny, and you're distracted by it. Stick to the real issues: war, economy, energy, political corruption etc. Granted, if it turns out the beauty contest stories are false, it says something about her integrity, but that issue is surely better addressed via more recent and more important stories, like troopergate. You'll have a hard time getting a lot of Americans to care about a tacky swimsuit parade a quarter of a century ago.

24. what real issues?
we all know Obama's policy positions. We know McCain is Bush III. We don't know squat about Sarah Palin. If the American people were not forced to vet this person, we wouldn't have to wade through all the shit to find out who the fuck she is.

then wouldn't "MISS" Wasilla by known as Sarah HEATH?????? You can not be a "Miss" with a married name! That is how these contests work.

BASKETBALL SUCCESS

"I know this sounds hokey, but basketball was a life-changing experience for me," Palin said recently on a rare night home in Wasilla, while her 5-year-old daughter, Piper, worked on homework at the kitchen counter. "It's all about setting a goal, about discipline, teamwork, and then success."

MISS CONGENIALITY

In her high school yearbook, the future gubernatorial candidate quoted the Bible, signed the class page "Sarah Heath #22," and listed a demure ambition: to sit in a broadcast booth with Howard Cosell broadcasting basketball games played by her boyfriend, Todd Palin.

Sarah went on to study journalism and political science in college, graduating from the University of Idaho in 1987. Along the way she competed in the Miss Alaska contest after being chosen Miss Wasilla 1984. In the Wasilla contest, she played the flute and also won the title of Miss Congeniality.
-----------------
Palin has cited her mayoral work as a central part of her qualification to serve as governor. But at the beginning of her term, asked by the local newspaper how she would run the city without experienced department heads, she made the job sound like no big deal: "It's not rocket science. It's $6 million and 53 employees."

Candidate at a glance:
Sarah Palin
Party: Republican
Age: 42
Occupation: commercial fishing, volunteer coach/manager
Previous offices: Wasilla City Council, 1992-1996; Wasilla mayor, 1996-2002; Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, 2003-2004.
Education: University of Idaho, B.S. degree, Journalism, 1987

27. A couple of days ago
someone posted a copy of a piece written by someone who'd been in the Miss Alaska contest with Ms. Heath and included a photo of all the young ladies. So it's true, she really did win the Miss Wasilla and place second in the Miss Alaska contest in 1984.

Lots of women compete in beauty contests. It's really not a big deal. For some women it's important and it's how they define themselves, for some it's just something that happens once.
