Abortion still distorts American politics.
From the ECONOMIST:

The Palin appointment is yet more proof of the way that abortion still distorts American politics. This is as true on the left as on the right. But the Republicans seem to have gone furthest in subordinating considerations of competence and merit to pro-life purity. One of the biggest problems with the Bush administration is that it appointed so many incompetents because they were sound on Roe v Wade. Mrs Palin’s elevation suggests that, far from breaking with Mr Bush, Mr McCain is repeating his mistakes.

1. This is the main way the repukes get ordinary people to vote
against their own interests on every other issue. Yet those people who vote for them due to that issue have been had, as the same justices they think will overturn Roe v. Wade are the same ones who will overturn the Bill of Rights. And even if Roe v. Wade were overturned, many states would still not criminalize abortion. After 30 years of availability, laws against it would be impossible to enforce a ban.

Not to mention that the same people they think they are "saving" could well be, 20 years later, dead due to some useless war.

2. The states where the Christianists live in large numbers would indeed overturn abortion..
I live in one and there is not a scintilla of doubt in my mind that the state legislature would overturn abortion rights in a hummingbird's heartbeat.

And the governor would sign the proclamation just as fast.
