A little moment to share with my DU friends.
I got up around 7:00 am this morning, and, as usual, headed for the bathroom. I couldn't help noticing Mr. Big, our big, plump male ferret, scratching and clawing at the wooden blinds at one of the windows facing out toward the pool. I thought this somewhat odd, as he is hardly EVER interested in looking out of this window. I went on to the bathroom and when I came back out, he was STILL going at it with the window blinds - the window being close enough to the floor, and there being a box he could climb up on, also. I felt obligated to raise the blinds a little to let him have a look, so I pulled them up enough to let him get in the widow sill and peer out. When he got in the window, he seemed to want ME to look, as he seemed more intent on just having gotten me to open the blinds. A quick glance at the pool made me realize that there were ripples coming from behind the edge of pool wall - the water being about 6" below the top of the wall. I am used to saving exhausted frogs from the water because they get in and don't realize there is no way to climb back out. I figured I would go save the little fellow in a few minutes, when I got some clothes on and was a little more awake. Then the little creature swam out from the edge of the pool wall and into view. It was a VERY exhausted field mouse or small brown rat. I have never seen one of these animals get stuck in the pool and my heart immediately went out to the poor little thing. I ran and got my pants on and climbed out the window(the pool, once for the trailer park residents, now private, has a fence around it with a gate that stays locked) to help the nearly drowned rodent to safety. He was barely able to stumble away under his own power, but I believe he probably was OK after he was rested up. I came back in and hugged Mr. Big and told him he was a hero.

Yes. I know it was probably just a coincidence, but it sure did provide a bright spot in my life in these days of unrelenting negativity and seeming hopelessness that our once proud country finds itself in.

One sweet moment.

Anybody else had a little 'pick-me-up' moment, lately?

(Mods, if this subject needs moving, feel free to do so - I'm not so up on the rules around here anymore)

1. Hopefully some polar bears will find their way to your pool -
they might need saving, too, if Palin has her way.

5. I too saw a brown haired rodent in over its head gasping and struggling lately...
Oh wait, that was Sarah Palin giving her speech at the RNC.

:P

6. My wife did a similar thing.
Except it was a rather large dog in the pool with another on the deck barking. Poor guy couldn't get out, and the other dog was panicking and barking. My wife says she didn't know what was going on and thought the dog on the deck was vicious until she saw the dog in the pool struggling. Anyway, she pulled the dog out of the pool and they went on their way.

7. A bird hit my window and I got him and held him until he had a few
of his marbles back. He sat and looked at me, just really knocked over and let me pet him without fear. It was the quietest, nicest moment I've had in a long time. Your ferret is God. tell him I hug him from Alaska.

10. Bizarre coincidence. It must be a convergence.
I was on my way to the store early this afternoon and found a half-drowned baby squirrel in the driveway. Though I consider them vermin and was sure it was going to die (it was breathing bubbles), I couldn't stand the thought of it being run over so I brought it upstairs, wrapped it in a towel and put it in the tub.

Went to the store and, on the way back, saw what I guess was the mother, grooming and dragging another (very dead) baby. I figure they were drowning in the nest and she brought them down.

Anyway, nine hours later and my charge is dry, warm and sleeping.

I'll try to reunite them tomorrow, but if anyone's got any suggestions about what to do if I can't find Mom....

11. Fostering baby squirrels is a very tough job
If the reunion doesn't go well, you should check to see if there is a wild life rescue site in your area. Your local ASPCA should know.

14. Great news!!!
Not only did the baby squirrel recover and sleep all night, I took it out in a paper bag about half an hour ago. Mama squirrel was still looking for it, found it (us) in less than fifteen minutes and, in spite of several gawkers and a bit of foot traffic, dragged it back up into the tall oak tree where they started out yesterday.

I still don't *like* squirrels, but I've known a lot of people with less maternal instinct and bravery - she didn't back down in the face of a particularly hyper dog that got between them. I may have to adjust my opinion.

15. And now, up in that tree, reunited with her baby,...
...a SQUIRREL is rethinking HER dislike for humans.

And now YOU are a hero.
