Congressman blasts Utah candidate's 'tent city'
Edited on Sat Sep-06-08 03:44 PM by DogPoundPup
A California congressman who was imprisoned in a Japanese internment camp during World War II is criticizing a Utah Republican candidate for his plan to detain undocumented immigrants in tent cities.

In statement issued Friday, California Democratic Rep. Mike Honda said Jason Chaffetz's plan is an "odious reminder" of a shameful time in U.S. history. He says Chaffetz's comments on the plan will "fuel resentment toward targeted ethnic groups."

Chaffetz is running for Utah's 3rd District congressional seat. He says never singled out any specific ethnic group in his immigration proposal and wants an apology from Honda.

Chaffetz says his idea to house convicted immigrants in prison camps ringed by barbed wire was borrowed from the Maricopa County, Ariz., sheriff's office, which houses prisoners awaiting deportation in tent cities.
