Class To Keep Sept. 11 Memory Alive
Program Hopes To Go Nationwide

POSTED: 11:39 am EDT September 6, 2008
UPDATED: 11:43 am EDT September 6, 2008

TRENTON, N.J. -- The three River Dell Regional High School alumni who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks are remembered with their pictures in the lobby and scholarships given out every year.

Principal Lorraine Brooks laments that the attacks themselves are distant childhood memories for the Oradell school's students, something she hopes to correct with a new education program.

The roughly 1,000-student high school, about 12 miles north of Manhattan, is piloting a special class lesson designed by the Brick-based Sept. 11 Education Trust.

Next Tuesday, 25 juniors in a U.S. history class will go through iconic 9/11 photographs and filmed interview segments with journalists and eyewitnesses. They'll engage in class exercises on the stories they're seeing and hearing.

The point, Brooks said, is to make sure that Sept. 11 still means something to students, even as it increasingly becomes a piece of history. She compared it to lesson plans that make sure the horrors of the Holocaust aren't forgotten.

"The truth is we teach about 9/11, but we teach about it from our perspective, whereas this is a little more global and has a little more bite going on with it," Brooks said.

1. they have a class... it's called history
this wouldn't be so much of a 'class' as it would be a propaganda fest.

7. I doubt that any American will forget that day even as I will never
forget where I was the day FDR, JFK and RFK died. These are memories that will be there when we are in a nursing home and cannot remember anything else.

8. They're covering 9/11 as part of a history class - seems extremely appropriate to me.
I wish all schools would do that.
