Palin has created quite a stir ... with her designer glasses

The nation's eyes aren't just on Gov. Sarah Palin — they're on her glasses.

It's been awhile since the optical business has been as charged by celebrity specs as it has by the rimless pair the vice presidential nominee wears most of the time. If she wins, it could rock the vision-care market, which totals $26.6 billion a year, says tracker Jobson Optical Research.

It's already shaking up the company that makes them.

"We keep getting calls from dealers who want to stock the exact shape and style that she's wearing," says Amy Hahn, vice president at Italee, the U.S. distributor of the frames designed by Kazuo Kawasaki, a Japanese industrial designer.

The Palin frame — minus the lenses — starts at a suggested $375. Depending on the type of lenses, the total package can run to $700.

2. Celebrity Product Placement

Sounds like a PR blitz by the glasses company and if they aren't already paying Palin, she'll sure be asking soon.

BTW those are butt ugly glasses... all fussy and trying too hard. Good for the vain.

4. Palin's *glasses* cost more than Michelle's $150 dress!
Not to mention Cindy's $300,000 outfit, $280,000 of which went for diamonds to decorate her earlobes.

5. It's like the Dorothy Hamill haircuts. I remember when everyone had to get one even
if it was all wrong for their face shape. LOL (I sorta got one, but hey, I was 8 years old at the time so you can't hold it against me. :P)

10. glad she can afford glasses
I have tri-focals with a special prescription to correct a "shift" in one eye

my health insurance doesn't have a eye plan, and the separate plan offered by my employer won't cover my type of prescription

the glasses I have now are around 6 years old, between the eye exam, cheapest pair of frames I could find, and the lenses - it ran about $350 for a pair of glasses. last year I went a couple of eyeglass places, asked them to give me an estimate based on my current prescription - $400 just for them lenses, tack on at least another $100+ for the exam/frames

can't afford it in this crappy economy

14. I mispoke
the eyecare insurance that is offered through my employer doesn't cover it. my employer doesn't put up anything towards the eyecare insurance, they just pass the info along and help process the initial paperwork and arrange for payroll deduction - after that you are on your own

the eyecare insurance plan will cover an eye exam, but anything beyond a basic single vision or bifocal prescription - they won't cover.

away from Palin's questionable "executive experience," her problematic parenting, and her creepy hubby.

The fluff meter is off the scale with this ridiculous story.

Any catching NPR lately, btw? I'm thinking they may need to change their name to National Palin Radio. I mean, seriously!

And enough with Kooky Roberts already, plugging ABC's upcoming interview with Palin with Charlie Gibson. Let's see her go on Oprah, now that I'd like to see!

13. Thorstein Veblen was right.
"Conspicuous consumption" (or "conspicuous waste") and sex. Veblen was, putatively, an expert on both. This story has elements of both conspicuous consumption and sex.
