Lawn Sign Theft
How does one best prevent childish conservatards from confiscating Obama signs from my front lawn?

In years past I have had my Gore and Kerry signs disappeared from my lawn.I recently swung by Obama headquarters and donated 5 bucks for a lawn sign but I am hesitant to put it in the yard in my very repuke conservatoid town.

Suggestions so far have included smearing honey or some other viscous liquid around the edges... but I'm not sure thats enough...

anybody have any good ideas?

3. a small weatherproofed note attached, informing of consequences if sign is stolen
Namely, that you'll contribute another twenty bucks to the campaign for each sign stolen, and that you've got plenty more signs.

Having a large American flag on display (respectfully displayed, of course--take it in if it's raining, and light it at night) probably doesn't hurt.

My HOA is a bit weird about political signs and I haven't displayed mine yet, but this is going to be my approach. Anyone else have any better ideas, I'm all ears as well.

which I am not sure about. It would probably take them hours to parse the note and digest the consequences.

Keep on stealing them, idiot. I got plenty more."

That's easy enough for the knuckle-dragger to parse.

8. Smear the sign with urushiol (found on poison ivy).. Anyone who touches it
will get a serious rash on their hands (and any other body part they touch with their hands). Doing this may involve old garden gloves that will need to be thrown away afterwards.

if you get it on your garden shoes/gloves in the summer, then don't use them again until the Spring, I have heard that you can still get a rash.

10. I doubt you can stop someone from taking the sign..
A couple of ideas:

A motion sensor webcam set up to video whoever takes your sign. Freeware is available to turn any webcam into a motion sensor recording device.. I'll be happy to provide links if you are interested.

Smear the edges of the sign with roofing cement, the type that can be applied when wet.. It is a pure pain to get it off your hands and it ruins clothing.

The very hottest pepper juice you can find smeared on the edges of the sign, when the thief wipes their eyes or privates afterward they will have a most unpleasant burning sensation. Jabanero peppers are among the hottest commonly available.

set one up by your window focused on the sign ...

motion switches. Sirens would be fun, but there's no point in further pissing off the neighbors who aren't stealing your stuff. Security cameras are getting really cheap now, too.

And move the sign closer to the house so they are squarely in the middle of the lawn when the light goes off.

(Solutions involving a shotgun and lots of string are not recommended.)

17. There's no fool proof way.
However, here's a helpful idea: instead of using the chintzy metal frame that most of the signs provide, go to a hardware store & purchase two wooden stakes & pound them solidly into the ground. They are not nearly so easy to remove as the metal frames. I've took my plastic Obama sign, cut it into two sections & hammered the edges of the sign onto the stakes with small metal staples. But if someone really wants to steal your sign, they are going to steal it.

It's sad that people feel they can vandalize those who disagree with them. Our culture no longer encourages respect toward those whom you disagree with or those who are different & it's getting worse.

Good luck!

Edited on Mon Sep-08-08 08:42 AM by NikolaC
has had his McCain sign up for a few weeks now, even though it is supposedly against the HOA rules (only "For Sale", "Open House", security or lost child symbols in the windows are allowed, all others are "Prohibited"). My thinking, if he is allowed to do it, I am going to get myself an Obama yard sign if he is not fined for it, or asked to remove it. My advice, put it up on your yard and keep putting them up. Don't let the ignorant asses be the only ones with the right to show their political affiliation. Also, some cat poo in strategic places should also help.

Edited To Add: I just called the HOA and they told me that, in spite of the bylaws, it was okay to put up a political sign (I did not mention it was an Obama sign just to see what they would say). I can't wait to see how okay they will be with it once the sign goes up .

Tie some fishing line to the sign (hide it well) and run the line up the yard and into your house.... inside the house you'll have the other end tied to some noisy wind chimes.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Keep your camera and/or notebook (to get plate number, whatever) by the door and ready to go. (or in my case maybe a shotgun)

Or put out several signs in the yard and inside on the windows of your house.

OR with a little cash and some elbow grease, you could build your own sign with 4X4's and plywood.

25. Understand that the only damage the criminals are doing is to your morale.
Elections are NEVER won or lost by lawn signs. Yes, they help reinforce support, but they never decide an election. At least if the Rape-Publican criminals are out stealing signs, they're NOT knocking on doors or calling undecideds.

That being said, a crime is a crime is a crime. Therefore I'd report any thefts to the police, and - if possible - I'd set up a security camera and I'd use the tape to press charges the next time it happens.

NGU.

32. There used to be a
garden product called "Tangle Foot". It was a thick gloppy goop that was put on the trunks of trees to keep insects from crawling up to the leaves. You need turpentine to get it off of your skin. Sticky as hell. Haven't seen it in years but it still might be out there. Smear it around the edge of the sign and wait for the fun.

39. It should be invisible
or they won't fall into it. So, no landscape faux pas!

Also, I think you're confusing "tiger trap" with "punji pit".

"TT" is a deep pit for the prey to actually fall into and not be able to climb out. Sharpened stakes are optional.

"PP" is a small covered hole into which your victim can step, the floor of the hole lined with sharpened bamboo stakes to pierce the foot or lower leg and cause injury. Pig/human excrement on the stakes is optional.

The republican thugs would surely sue you, though...
