Church's 'loving warning' to gay teens: 'I kissed a girl...then I went to hell'

Katy Perry's pop hit about a girl-on-girl kiss has prompted an Ohio church to expand on the message on its roadside sign, The Columbus Dispatch reported.

"It's not something that is really a shock if you're a scriptural person," said the Rev. Dave Allison of the 100-member Havens Corners Church in Blacklick, Ohio. "We meant that as a loving warning to teens."

"The Scriptures," Allison added, "tell us that you should not do what the song tells you to do. The Scriptures are not ambiguous on this issue."

Equality Ohio director Lynne Bowman acknowledged the church's right to its beliefs and notes that at least 300 churches in Ohio are more welcoming than Havens Corners. "That sign just tells where they cannot go to find the love and faith in Christ," she said.

"It's just rude," said local resident Wendy Olinski. "At first I have to say I laughed hysterically because I was shocked...It was obvious: 'If you're gay, you're going to hell.'"

"But that's going way too far," she added.

1. The scriptures are not ambiguous on this issue...
Absolutely true, there is no mention of lesbian sex in the Bible at all, hence no ambiguity.

2. This stuff makes me sick...

As a "soccer mom" from the 'burbs, and someone who is questioning spirituality and religious issues
(Should our family go to church? What about our kids? Is there a God?), this is the kind of stuff
that drives me away from all of it.

I meet many religious people who are kind, gracious, wonderful people. Then, you've got people
who attend churches like this.

It's so vile. So disgusting.

These people drive others away from religion.

For my gay brother and sisters out there--please know that for every bigot who believes this nonsense--there are
many others who support you and think this attitude is trash, and some of us are stay-at-home moms from the
suburbs!

4. I would bet that church
is entirely made of glass. The Rev. Allison is the type of preacher who thinks he is God.

5. I wish the reporter had asked for evidence
to support the claim that "The Scriptures ... tell us that you should not do what the song tells you to do."

Of course, there's the deeper issue of whether any particular holy book is all that great a guide for modern living.
