They always manage to do it, don't they?
They set us up for no win situations. And we always find ourselves there.

Now its this whole Oprah crap.

First off, while Oprah is a powerful person, she has admirably stayed neutral in the use of her teevee show. Obama was last on **before** he announced for president. Oprah said she will not use her show to as a platform for anything political and she has been good to her word.

And that ought to be the end of it.

But the repubicans are playing this one hard.

"Sarah needs to be on Oprah."

"Oprah speaks to women. Women want to hear about Sarah." As if women can't watch the Sunday morning talk shows?

"Well, we all know Oprah backs Obama." "We should boycott Oprah's show and magazine unless she has Sarah on."

And what if Oprah **does** have Sarah on? And asks Sarah a serious/difficult/substantive question?

Same answers as above:

"Well, we all know Oprah backs Obama." "We should boycott Oprah's show and magazine unless she has Sarah on."

Plus:

"That was a Democratic hit job on Sarah." "Poor Sarah the victim." "Why do Democrats always do this?" "The Democrats were mean to Sarah."

No matter that it is all lies. This is a meme that could stick.

Yup. They set us up.

Again.

Like they always do.

Am I off base with this speculation?

1. They do, that's why we have to hit back. And Oprah can have whomever she wants on her show.

2. Nope. That's why Oprah should stick to her guns.
Caving to criticism and having Palin on her show would definitely lead to the 2nd scenario you lay out. It's time our side started sticking to its principles, and fuck what the RW thinks/says about it.

Remember the whole lawsuit brought by the Tx beef council?
I don't think she'll cave in to anyone.

3. Oprah should just tell it straight.
Come right out and say that she profoundly disagrees with Palin's views and refuses to let her show be used to promote her.

It's her show, after all.

4. I don't think they really want her to go on Oprah before the
election. I think most mainstream women would be horrified by Palin's views and the GOP doesn't want her exposed as an extremist before a huge female audience. I'm sure Palin would come under harsher scrutiny if interviewed by Oprah than by Charles Gibson, the GOP wouldn't be allowed to control the questions and the responses. This latest 'controversy' is just a continuation of their campaign strategy to generate sympathy for Palin because 'the media is against her'.

6. They are so great at creating non-issues
they find things to make issues of and that attracts the media to them.

Maybe we should start making up issues - except they'll be true. On this side, we are uncomfortable with stooping as low as they do.

It would be funny if she went on Oprah and O. grilled her on her pregnancy. After all, isn't that the sort of thing women care about? :sarcasm:

That picture of Quaylin at the Governor's Convention in Feb. 2008 - she is clearly not pregnant. It is all very weird, but all very suspicious. This is the type of thing the RW would take advantage of and we don't because we're too decent.

7. I think this is a non issue but if Oprah capitulates I think she
should devote a solid hour to a very uncomfortable silence with Carribou Barbie. She should not ask a single question. Just sit there with carribou barbie and stare, mostly at the camera. Oprah should do this especially if the campaign will not allow little sarah to talk to anyone but the laughable Charlie Gibson.

I doubt if Oprahs audience will be seriously diminished by any right wing boycot, even from Florida.

8. Oprah should say that since Palin isn't doing many interviews,
she should stick with more political shows. That way voters can get a better sense of what the candidate stands for, in the few chances they'll have to see her.

In other words, Palin's not doing interviews anyway. Therefore, fuck her.

9. I think you are wrong on some facts.
In the past Oprah has had George Bush on her show IIRC. Does she ever do a hardball interview?

As for boycotting Oprah, I worry about Oprah's career about as much as I worry about Miley Cyrus's. They are both already filthy rich and if somehow they were prevented from making another ten billion dollars or more, it would not be that big a deal. It's not like they would really suffer being forced to live on the hundreds of millions or billions that they've already made. I should have that problem.

10. Thanks for playing the game
First, I never said she didn't have any candidates on. I said (fact, not speculation) that she has said that, in **this election**, she will not have candidates on. And to that word, she has been true.

Next, where did I indicate a personal concern for Oprah's career?
