Skaters and their moms hate Democrats. How do I know?
Yesterday, I went up to a rather affluent suburb to watch my friend skate in a competition. As I drove out of the parking lot, one car had McCain AND Bush/Cheney '04 stickers on it, and a sign that said, "SKATE GREAT".

I think this is because skating is an expensive hobby, so the moms must be rich enough to not have to worry that this country is going down the toilet. (Well, something like that...)

3. NO.
There are too many repukes in skating. I see far more Bush/McCain/etc. stickers on their cars than I do Obama ones.

many are raised by republicans, many others are raised by Dems, some put stickers on their car

8. Ok, finally something that relates to my past.
I was one of the original skaters. Back in the mid-seventies when the polyurethane wheels came out and skating became cool again. I bought my first board in San Diego and brought it back to northern ca where no one had the new boards. We used to have to send money to my sister, who was in San Diego at the time so she could buy boards and send them back to me and my friends. I competed for a couple of years in the early stuff in the late 70's and very early 80s and back then we were a pretty liberal group. Those that had any political leanings at all were Dem, or even further to the left, and the rest were not into politics at all.

The kids skating today are the kids of people like me. I'm sure a few changed over the years, but I find it hard to believe that most are conservative pugs.

As for being expensive? What to you need man? You need a board and a curb. Go skate.

And oh yeah, skate boarding is not a crime.

17. I skated all day on metal wheels back then.
I can still remember how my feet felt like they were vibrating after a long day of skating. We could only afford the cheap plastic boards with the polyurethane wheels. The boards would bend in the middle. But they still rode like Cadillacs compared to the metal wheels.

15. And then there is Tonya Harding, but I agree that athletes from wealthy
families are probably better able to afford all the coaches and rink time so they probably would lean Republican. However, years ago I used to skate at a rink where a famous pairs couple used to practice. They probably would have won the gold if the boy didn't suffer an injury at the Olympics. Right now I can't remember their names but they were from working class backgrounds. The girl was African American. Since they couldn't always afford to rent the rink for practice, they practiced among the skaters in the regular times the rink was open to the public. They were magnificent to watch as they glided in and out of the skaters doing their routine effortlessly and not mowing any one down. I really felt that they were so cheated in spite of all their sacrifices in what was an act of God.

25. AH! Well then, you may have a point
I have nothing but anecdotal evidence to go on, but virtually every "figure skater" I ever saw was urged into it by exactly the kind of parents you'd expect to want to turn their little snowflake into a prima donna on ice. In short, Republicans.

BTW, you can ignore a lot of the nastiness above. Apart from the honest misunderstandings there are a couple of posters there that ONLY seem to post in response to people so that they can unleash insults. I swear, I don't think they type with their fingers but rather by mashing at their keyboards with sledgehammers and nunchuks.

36. DUers are constantly on the look-out for things to be offended by.
BTW, your original observation is, IMNSHO, "spot on".

Figure skaters and figure-skating moms are generally a cross-
section of over-privileged, under-utilized, melanin-deficient
suburbanites; it's no surprise that they, as a class, would be
strongly supportive of Republican candidates.

24. Skating is one of the cheapest sports
A board costs about 50 bucks, trucks 50, wheels 15, wax 50 cents. And you don't ever have to buy trucks again. What else do you need? Some 50 dollar designer "skater" tshirts and some saggy pants?

If all rich people were pukes, Dems would be screwed... but all skaters definately aren't rich  Hell MOST are poor.

26. Figure skating is
extremely expensive. I went to high school with a competitive figure skater--her family spent over 50K per year on training, ice time, travel, outfits, skates etc.

She had to pay for every minute of time on the ice--and the freestyle sessions (where people have room to jump, spin and dance) are very expensive I think at least 10 dollars per hour--times over 20 hours of practice on the ice per week. She definitely spent several hundred per week on ice time. Plus coaching--her coach was 80 dollars per hour--she had 3 hours per week of coaching. The outfits are expensive, getting music professionally cut for the programs is expensive, travelling to competitions is very expensive--she had to not only pay her way but also had to have her coach there--and she had to pay for that too! She also had a personal trainer, dance coach---lots of other expensive things.

This is probably the most expensive sport out there--except maybe yacht racing. I wonder if my friend in high school was a repub? I had a huge crush on her--but lost track of her ages ago. She went to Nationals--but didn't do that well. Still--was a really fantastic athelete to make it that far.
