4. That's the price you pay when you live in a nation that allows corporate consolidation over the news
Some of the biggest corporations in the world own the same news outlets the American people view regularly. These corporations would lose billions in future profits if a Democrat shifted the burden of taxation off of the working class back onto the wealthy.

8. CNN has them tied. Forget Gallup. They are probably tied after McCain's convention bump.
Don't focus on Gallup. They are the most volatile of the polls. They do wild swings and their likely voter model knocks a lot of Dem voters out.

The CNN poll came out today.

We are at the strongest post convention bump time for McCain. Wait for equilibrium to set back in.

14. I am not worried, but neither am I complacent..
Remember, only land lines are polled. This is primarily the domain of older, more conservative voters. Cell phones are not polled, and as we are all aware, there are many cell phones out there, most of them owned by younger, more progressive voters who are more likely to vote for Obama/Biden, and who do not have traditional land lines. Provided they are not brainwashed by the MSM. It's not as close as you think.

17. I will be worried if that lead by McCain holds (or grows) until Oct 1 or so. Now, not so much.
A lot is going to depend on the actual campaigns. People who say they are entranced by Sarah Palin may not be so entranced after they see her performance on the campaign trail, the debate, etc. and hear more about her record in Alaska. And the fundanentals still vastly favor Obama. The right wing fundies cannot elect McCain President all by their little selves, no matter how "energized" they get.

23. There was a post
right after the Dem convention about the Obama campaign. In it, the campaign manager or some other higher up said that Gallup is worthless. I have kept this in mind as I watched the polls go up and down. The polls that the Obama camp is watching are their internal polls that we aren't privy too. So, channel that despair into something positive like canvassing or phone banking and don't pay attention. I know, it's hard.

53. McCain got a bounce with Palin
Edited on Mon Sep-08-08 07:20 PM by fujiyama
I never thought it was a great idea to underestimate her. She's a skilled speaker and is popular in AK. She's also freaking insane and unfortunately many people don't know that. They just hear she's popular in AK and that she's a tough woman that has several kids and got "unfairly attacked by the media". It's frustrating, but getting depressed over a set of numbers that constantly change is pointless.

Also, it's worth noting that the party that has the latter convention usually has an advantage. That's been the case in the past and is today as well.

If you're depressed, go work for the campaign. Have some conversations with real people. Maybe you'll agree with many. It's possible you won't as well. If you don't live in a state where you feel your work won't matter as much (I think there are many states out there this year that are potential picks so I wouldn't let polls determine your involvement), work for a senate or congressional candidate.

But don't get depressed over poll numbers. Get depressed by electoral results if you want, but we're certainly not there...

60. The overall poll means nothing. It is the state by state poll that is important.
Remember, the election isn't decided by popular vote. If it was, Al Gore would be our President. It is decided by electoral vote.

You know, I'm starting to think that caller ID has as much to do with the poll numbers as the cell phones that aren't polled. I don't answer calls that have "out of area" designations on my caller ID. How many people just aren't answering the phone because they have caller ID and they don't recognize the phone number, or the phone number doesn't come up?

61. think of american presidential cycles as something like reality teevee
it's all orchestrated, choreographed, market-tested, manipulated, tracked, influenced by special interests and corporations, and the decision is already written into the narrative.

it's all "bread and circuses" for the magazine reading american demimonde of shallow-pates, nincompoops, and boobs.

and that sinking feeling of "oh my god! i CANNOT believe they did that and got away with it!" is all too familiar now.
