'Nanny' star, pro-choice advocate named US public envoy
WASHINGTON (AFP) – "Nanny" star Fran Drescher, a cancer survivor, advocate of female empowerment and opponent of abortion legislation, was named Monday as a new US public diplomacy envoy.
Drescher, star of the international comedy hit "The Nanny," joins baseball legend Cal Ripken Jr and figure-skating superstar Michelle Kwan as celebrity envoys who help polish Washington's image abroad.
"I will spread my message of self-empowerment, healthy living and early detection" on a first tour later this month of Romania, Hungary, Kosovo and Poland, Drescher told reporters following her appointment.
Drescher, whose own doctors missed the signs of her uterine cancer for two years, said she would urge women to be more forceful with their doctors, who are usually male, because early detection increases chances of survival.

Asked her views on abortion, Drescher said: "I think that government is out of place to legislate a woman's body.
"But I do think that the world has to become a more female-friendly place so that a woman can make the choice for pro-life on her own because she knows that she and her unborn will be well taken care of," Drescher said.
