U.S. Military Relied On Oliver North To Dispute Afghanistan Civilian Deaths

For weeks, the U.S. military has denied charges that its Aug. 22 attack on Azizabad, Afghanistan killed scores of civilians, despite the fact that Afghan witnesses, the United Nations, and other human rights and international officials all say roughly 90 villagers were killed. Yesterday, the military reversed course and requested an investigation into the strike in light of “emerging evidence.” Part of that evidence is cellphone images showing “at least 11 dead children,” according to the New York Times.

As Firedoglake points out, the Times of London revealed that the U.S. had been relying on accounts from an embedded journalist: Fox News’s Oliver North:

The US military said that its findings were corroborated by an independent journalist embedded with the US force. He was named as the Fox News correspondent Oliver North, who came to prominence in the 1980s Iran-Contra affair, when he was an army colonel.

Relying on North for a “fair and balanced” view is a major mistake. Even leaving aside his past as a central figure in the Iran-Contra scandal under President Reagan, North routinely makes biased and unsourced claims:

4. Ollie North, SOB
Finally, he makes it obvious to everybody, even the people who haven't been paying attention, just what a lying liar piece of worthless lying scum he is.

In other news, embedded journalists are relied upon to say whatever the armed forces tell them to. Gee, ain't life a bitch when that doesn't work out? The stench of lies hangs all over this. If common decency, any moral sense at all, and the Geneva Convention weren't enough, you'd think My Lai would have taught them not to outright massacre civilians. The folks at home do not like that kind of bloody war criminal sh*t, no matter what the do-nothing (torture? what torture?) Congress thinks.

The operation in Azizabad once again raises questions for the military about whether it is worth pursuing members of the Taliban with airstrikes inside a densely populated village where civilian casualties and property damage can be so high. A similar raid in the same district by American Special Forces in April 2007, which killed 57 people, led American and NATO commanders to tighten rules on calling in airstrikes on village houses.

“This is not fair to kill 90 people for one Mullah Sadiq,” said Mr. Umarzai, the district chief. “If they continue like this, they will lose the people’s confidence in the government and the coalition forces.”

:eyes:

Well, duh. Shades of destroying the village in order to save it...

5. OUR military lies?? Perish the thought.
They have a long and glorious record of truth telling..well..they may fudge a little..sometimes it's necessary to hide certain things..they have to keep morale up...we can't have them seen as anything but gallant defenders of the American Way...OK..they lie..well, actually they lie a lot...Oh, just be a patriot and salute the flag.

7. It is a sane policy to allow the US Military investigate itself.
It assures a fair investigation without any bias.

Wy don't they send O'Liely. They would make such a wonderful couple.

11. Oliver North is a RWing Hero. Violating the US Constitution was
alright, as long as one was fighting the Evil Empire.
