NYC Bids Farewell To Coney Island's Historic Theme Park

POSTED: 12:11 pm EDT September 7, 2008
UPDATED: 11:06 am EDT September 8, 2008

NEW YORK -- After nearly half a century, Coney Island's beloved Astroland theme park is shutting its doors.

Only the Cyclone roller coaster and the Wonder Wheel, which are considered city landmarks, will remain of the renowned amusement park in which New Yorkers and those across the tri-state area shared summers and hot dogs for 46 years.

We want you to share your memories.

3. I was there yesterday
It was very crowded, especially when you consider it was after Labor Day.
The two best rides remain. It will be interesting to see what happens at this site over the next few years.

4. Never been to Coney Island but
I did enjoy the summer trips back in the early 60's when my Grandpa would take me via train to Atlantic City from Philly. Overwhelmingly great memories of spending some awesome quality time with one of my true heroes.

6. go see The Nation magazine, June 30
Barbara Ehrenreich's short essay: "This Land Is Their Land" about the fact that the rich have seized all the desirable properties and displaced regular people from places they previously lived and recreated. Evolutionary psychologists believe that the need for "scenery" is hard-wired into humans. People need to see water, trees, and things that indicate habitability. Too bad waterfront property is disappearing from public use.

7. I'm confused ...
Okay, I'm familiar with the Coney Island amusement park, and the Wonder Wheel, etc., but I've never heard of Astroland. Did the original Coney Island park morph in to Astroland 46 years ago, or am I missing something?
