Today I experienced a prime example of what we're fighting against.
I work in an extremely conservative company. Today I had lunch in the breakroom and sat with some friends. One of them was happy to go on and on about how if Obama was elected, "all the blacks would be expecting something from him. If they're not happy here, why don't they go back where they came from?"

She was all upset over possible reparations to African-Americans, and I guess she thinks it would be automatic if Obama was elected. Her sister has been emailing her lots of material about Palin (she's a D, I guess), but my friend is positive that Obama would just ruin this country--mostly just because he's not white.

I will be so glad when this election is over with . . . .

1. At least she's openly racist
I keep hearing that Obama is "scary". When asked to elaborate, they say, "You know."

That was the garbage I heard a lot from my former boss. I was soooooooo glad to leave that job!

2. Just wear an Obama button to work!
Maybe she'll keep her yap shut, at least to your face!

3. Mind-boggling stupidity and racism?
Edited on Mon Sep-08-08 06:26 PM by liberalmuse
Stupidity must trump intelligence in natural selection, or something. That's the only thing I can think of. There's simply no excuse for this.

4. I responded a few days ago
to a man that said he would have voted for Hillary, but not Obama. I said that the only reason I could think of that some one would do that is because they didn't want to vote for anyone that is half Irish.

5. This woman is obviously a bigot, and I know what it's like to work with them
but I call them on it to their faces, in front of their managers, so the bullshit ends. And once called, they are sent to 'sensitivity' training, it's the policy of the company's INSURANCE CARRIER, since they DO NOT want to be involved in any bias suits. EVERYONE had to view a video about this same subject (sexual harassment too) and SIGN a document AFTER they passed the written test.

We also had a jackass fired for using the "N" word and refusing to go to "training".

Check with your supervisors about the company policy.

6. Sounds like she needs some pointy stick justice.
I know a lot of knitters who'd be pretty darn ticked off at that argument.

7. "my friend is positive that Obama would just ruin this country"
Maybe you can tell her it's too late. The Bushes (white men) have already ruined the country.

When you've hit bottom, the only way we can go is up.

8. I hate to say this,
and I hate more that I've been thinking it ever since Obama rose up, but he's going to lose because we are a nation of bigots.

People you'd never suspect of being racist are, in fact, racist, and that is what will determine what happens when they go into that voting booth.

It makes me sick to write these words, to have these thoughts, but I know my country, and it's not a very pretty place.

9. I know my country, too Tangerine and it is making me ill to know that
Democrats, who I considered to be friends, will not vote for Obama because they don't want a Black man in the White House. That's what it means when they say, "I don't like the man".

11. Code
"I don't know his agenda."

"There's something about him I don't trust."

"I don't know enough about him."

All code language for "I'm a racist and I won't ever vote for a black man."

A good friend of mine told me his wife told him she could never vote for a black man. He nearly lost his mind. He's a life-long Republican, now a Democrat. A Marine Lt. Col. He says that the Republicans made him a Democrat. He hates that bastard in the White House perhaps even more than I do. A huge fan of Obama/Biden.

And his wife said that to him.

We don't talk about it.

12. Tomorrow, or in the next few days, YOU start the conversation about ...
... how much gas is.

Why food costs so much.

How much tax payers will pay to save Fannie and Freddie.

And who else the GOP will bail out at taxpayer's expense?

And how much money has disappeared in Iraq and how many people have died, etc, etc, etc.

And a blank to add your own text.

13. Oh, I forgot: how the DOW has been taking an shit since the RNC and ...
... how bad the dollar is, and how much of America is actually owned by the Chinese.

But, not at the same time.

Pace yourself.

14. This works too BTW
if you know the religion of a conservative person (my family is all LDS and this works for them) find out what Assembly of God believes in regards to their religon - in the case they are Mormon all you have to do is point out she believes her religious beliefs should be law and her beliefs are LDS people are all going to hell.

15. Talking about religion at my work is playing with fire.
Most of these people are conservative to the core, many of them megachurchers who think religion is the answer for everything. Democrats are responsible for all the problems in the country, from the gas prices to taxes to education--we're the devil, and us socialists just want to take over the world and put everybody on welfare.

I see the biggest problem about trying to discuss religion with these folks is that they've been taught how to answer those types of statements to make YOU look like the nutcase. I'm not very good at those kind of debates, so I tend to walk away. I also want to keep my job, so I have to keep my mouth shut.

16. When I was in high school
Which was just last year, I was in the Interact Club (community service club, so I guess I didn't really do anything except help the community and all, you know?) and our sponsor was this older woman who was also our college preparation... person. At the end of the year she had a kind of going-away party at her house for the seniors in the club. Well, we were kind of standing around talking with her and her husband, and politics came up. Her husband said, "I've said it once, and I'll say it again- Obama is a Muslim." I was FURIOUS, but I really couldn't say anything... he was much older than me, I'm only eighteen, and I would have felt out of place. So I quietly slipped outside to play pool, but those kind of bigots ENRAGE me. They're so ignorant.
