McCain Palin fires back over book ban rumor
Posted: 06:00 PM ET

From CNN's Abbi Tatton and Rebecca Sinderbrand

(CNN) — The McCain-Palin team is continuing its pushback campaign against stories about VP nominee Sarah Palin that have taken on a life of their own on the Internet.

On Monday, they sent reporters a memo in response to reports that the Wasilla, Alaska resident had tried to ban a lengthy list of books when she was mayor of that town.

“This is categorically false. The fact is that as Mayor, Palin never asked anyone to ban a book and not one book was ever banned, period,” McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers said, directing reporters to campaign research "debunking this smear."

Watchdog Web site snopes.com has also debunked an e-mail that purports to include a list of books Palin tried to ban – several of which were not even published in 1996, when the message says her attempt took place. Factcheck.org also published a lengthy list of rumors they had found to be false under the headline "Sliming Palin."

The language used echoes that of the Obama campaign’s “Fight the Smears” Web site and “Obama Action Wire” e-mails, which look to discredit false rumors about the Democratic nominee.

The McCain campaign has issued increasingly aggressive responses to rumors about the presumptive Republican VP nominee, including some detailed public statements denying sensational stories that had not previously been reported by any mainstream media organizations.

:) :)

I'm sorry but this was worth every enemy I made, and I'm sorry to those I pissed off I wanted Palin to be on the defensive for a change, SWIFT BOOKERS UNITE!

42. I KNOW she's a sociopath.
Common features of descriptions of the behavior of sociopaths:
(excerpts)
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.

Feels entitled to certain things as "their right."

Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.

A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.

Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others' feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them.

Rage and abuse, alternating with small expressions of love and approval produce an addictive cycle for abuser and abused, as well as creating hopelessness in the victim. Believe they are all-powerful, all-knowing, entitled to every wish, no sense of personal boundaries, no concern for their impact on others.

Not concerned about wrecking others' lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves, but blames others, even for acts they obviously committed.

Tends to move around a lot or makes all encompassing promises for the future, poor work ethic but exploits others effectively.

Changes their image as needed to avoid prosecution. Changes life story readily.

--R. Preston McAfee, CalTech

Doesn't that sound exactly like the GOP ticket?

I wrote a whole post on it: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=3939460&mesg_id=3939460

and tried to fire that librarian after she rebuffed her, twice.

47. Sure they did
the list of books she really did try to ban is out there somewhere. Most people think it will be known publicly eventually too. That's why this particular Republican con works so well, it's based in fact. They're good at what they do, no doubt about it.

3. Yes, but she did ask a librarian if the librarian was receptive to banning books. When the librarian
said no, she tried to fire the librarian.

So she never explicitly asked, but it seems only because the librarian shot her down.

If you see the McCain team response, it is technically true but the real truth is just as ugly.

40. She asked the librarian if she could "live with" the censorship of library books
"WASILLA -- In the wake of strong reactions from the city's library director to inquiries about censorship, Wasilla Mayor Sarah Palin on Monday was taking pains to explain her questions about censoring library material were “rhetorical.”

Library Director Mary Ellen Emmons last week said Palin broached the subject with her on two occasions in October - once Palin was elected mayor Oct. 1 but before she took office on Oct. 14, and again in more detail on Monday, Oct. 28. Besides heading the Wasilla City Library, Emmons is also president of the Alaska Library Association.

The issue became public last Wednesday, when Palin brought it up during an interview about the now-defunct Liquor task Force. Palin used the library topic as an example of discussions with her department heads about understanding and following administration agendas. Palin said she asked Emmons how she would respond to censorship.

Emmons drew a clear distinction Saturday between the nature of Palin's inquiries and an established book-challenge policy in place in Wasilla, and in most public libraries.

“I'm not trying to suppress anyone's views,” Emmons said. “But I told her (Palin) clearly, I will fight anyone who tries to dictate what books can go on the library shelves.”

<>

But on Monday, Oct. 28, Emmons said Palin asked her outright if she could live with censorship of library books. This was during a weak when Palin was requesting resignations from all the city's department heads as a way of expressing loyalty."

44. Get this:
"Emmons said Palin asked her on Oct. 28 if she would object to censorship, even if people were circling the library in protest about a book. “I told her it would definitely be a problem the ACLU would take on then,” Emmons said."

Yes Sarah, the Constitution is often upheld even when people are circling the library!

No facts.

But my imagination readily conjures a story line where the republicon black ops folk float the "list of banned books" so that it can be debunked, thereby shifting focus from the issue of threatening to fire the librarian.

Shazaaaam. Immunity by obfuscation.

Classique republicon black ops occultism? Or natural Intertubes happenstance? We speculate. You decide.

I think this is working nicely. Obama et al are taking high road. We are also taking high road, but it appears as if some stories got out before fully vetted. See, if they had brought her out in an orderly way, stuff like this wouldn't have happened. If she had taken interviews, stuff like this wouldn't have happened.

If she wasn't such a coward, stuff like this wouldn't have happened.

for now, in the msm, she's fighting herself. And losing.

ALL of my puke friends and family announced to me today that they will not be voting this ticket. they say McCain made a very bad judgment call with this pick and that she is simply not qualified.

so that is how she is fighting herself in the media....Obama and Biden and the team are letting her fight herself. giving the media a few nuggets to chew on....she fails. a few more, she fails.

meanwhile, back at base camp, we try really hard to debunk stuff but you can't get every single one.

OH, by the way, I got the most smear oriented email today FROM the pukes McCain campaign directly. It was full of lies. They do not even try to debunk things and even when they know they are not true, they repeat them. Their campaign does this! I have never ever gotten an email like this from Obama.

But, then, he has class.

and US. :-)

Gov Sarah Palin twice violated the votes of the sovereign will of
the people of Alaska as she instituted a $400,000 stolen tax fund
program to promote the aerial murder of bears and wolves, with a $150
bounty on the severed foreleg of every wolf.

not one book was banned.

After a clumsy attempt at recruiting a librarian to agree to banning books in order to pass a ludicrous loyalty test, mrs. palin's constituency told her to keep her hands off the library. In spite of mrs. palin's best efforts, a respected librarian won her town's support and not one book was banned.
