If you want to donate to STORM RELIEF IN HAITI, please consider the LAMBI FUND
Edited on Mon Sep-08-08 07:05 PM by Nothing Without Hope
Before I look at the official NOAA site for tropical storm updates (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov), I turn to Jeff Masters' blog (http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/show.html) for his thorough updates and insightful comments. I see there things I find nowhere else, not only detailed analysis, forecasts and historical comparisons on current hurricanes and tropical storms, but also his thoughtful discussions of impacts on the various countries in the storms' path.

I want to pass on to you his recommendation for a place to donate to help storm victims in Haiti:

The Lambi Fund of Haiti

(http://www.lambifund.org). Here is what Jeff said about it in two recent posts in his blog:

The tragedy in Haiti

As Ike pounds Haiti with torrential rains today, it is clear that Haiti will need massive assistance to recover from this latest disaster. If you're looking to contribute to the cause, I recommend the Lambi Fund of Haiti charity. I've been a contributor for a number of years, and have been impressed with their leadership and aims. The charity seeks not just to provide much needed temporary food aid, but to make investments in sustainable development in an effort to restore environmental integrity and reduce poverty. One of the main places my donations have gone is to fund the purchase and planting of thousands of trees on Haiti's denuded mountainsides. These treeless slopes, missing more than 98% of their original forest cover, allow flood waters from hurricanes to rush down and cause the mind-numbing loss of life we've grown to expect with each hurricane that affects Haiti. If you're looking to help out in the country in the Western Hemisphere that needs the most help, consider a donation to the Lambi Fund.

(An update 8:56 PM GMT on September 08, 2008)

The death toll in Haiti due to the onslaught of Hurricanes Gustav, Hanna, and Ike, plus Tropical Storm Fay, grew to at least 630 today (http://www.reliefweb.int/rw/rwb.nsf/db900sid/VDUX-7JAKVS?OpenDocument&rc=2&emid=TC-2008-000151-BHS), as more victims of Hurricane Hanna were identified. Rains from Hurricane Ike have killed at least 61 people, and the death toll is sure to rise higher as rescuers reach more remote flooded areas in coming days. Haiti needs all the help it can get, and I want to thank all of you who donated to the Lambi Fund of Haiti charity I recommended yesterday. I've heard from the administrators of the charity that several hundred of you have made on-line donations. Wow! Heartfelt thanks!

I URGE YOU TO CONSIDER JEFF MASTERS' ADVICE AND LOOK THROUGH THE LAMBI FUND HOME PAGE FOR MORE INFORMATION:
http://www.lambifund.org

The Lambi Fund not only is helping the victims of the recent series of violent storms there, but it is deeply involved in developing long-term betterment for all of Haiti's people.

6. Thanks! She's a true horror who shows just how low McCain has fallen
With all this going on, it's often harder to remember the people in our country and elsewhere who need urgent help.

As for Palin, I'm hoping that Americans will not be as stupid as the GOP machine assumes. This is a turning point for the country, one way or the other.

7. Not just McCain, but the whole GOP. Pathological lying is something sociopaths love to do.
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.

--R. Preston McAfee, CalTech

Doesn't that sound exactly like the GOP ticket?

I wrote a whole post on it: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=3939460&mesg_id=3939460

11. Oh yes, they are surely sociopaths. I've left a short post in your interesting thread.
Not surprisingly, the Bush Administration and the candidates are not expressing any concern about the Haitian people. Their hypocrisy is enough to gag a toad.

8. Thank you for this post. I respect Dr. Masters..and any Charity he says is Good...is one I want to
Donate to.

He's been posting on the plight of the Haitians for weeks and just so new DU Posters understand. Dr. Masters put out a warning about "DEATH AND DISTRUCTION" about Katrina hitting New Orleans and it was the most hearfelt, terrifying post on the internet I've ever seen!

Jeff Masters is a "Good SOUL!" I trust any foundation or charity he recommends because he's not a BUSH BOT...and is in a "special place all his own."

Check out the Lambifund Website... These folks are trying to PLANT TREES on HAITI's Mountain Tops so they wont FLOOD...over and over and over.

Every little bit to help these people that Repugs and even Clinton envaded to always corrupt their government ...deserves some help...

9. Thank you for this longer term view of Dr. Masters. I first "found" him
in the aftermath of Katrina and have followed his blog ever since. He's taught me a lot. He has such a broad view, and his experienced skill as a storm analyst and also his insight and unfailing compassion, have been a steady inspiration. He's got real courage too - he was a Hurricane Hunter, one of the brave souls who fly into hurricanes to get essential data for storm forecasting, for years. A hero with wisdom and heart.

14. Thanks for this! I'll pass along this info, also!
I've been searching for somewhere to donate that is not so tainted by corruption that one would have to wonder what monies are used for.

The Lambi Fund looks like just the org I've been looking for and a guarantee that donations will actually be used for relief to all Haitians! Thanks to you for putting this up and thanks to Jeff Masters for his recommendation.

22. ***UPDATE FROM DR. JEFF MASTERS ON THE HAITI SITUATION***
Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 12:07 PM by Nothing Without Hope
This is at the end of the current post on his blog, after an intensive discussion of Ike's present and future:

http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/comment.html?entrynum=1074&tstamp=200809

The tragedy in Haiti

The death toll in Haiti due to the onslaught of Hurricanes Gustav, Hanna, and Ike, plus Tropical Storm Fay, is now over 1,000 people (http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/weather/bal-te.ike09sep09,0,1075018.story). At least 14,000 homes have been destroyed, and 800,000 people are without food, water, and/or shelter. The death toll is sure to rise higher as rescuers reach more remote flooded areas in coming days. The economic impact of the disaster is projected to be (http://www.reliefweb.int/rw/rwb.nsf/db900SID/KSAI-7JB349?OpenDocument&rc=2&cc=bhs) greater than the 2004 devastation wrought by Hurricane Jeanne, which killed over 2,000 people. Haiti needs all the help it can get, and I want to thank everyone who has donated to the Lambi Fund of Haiti charity. They're an outstanding group that I've supported for a number of years, and they focus on fixing the underlying causes of poverty and natural disasters in Haiti.

Tonight, at 9pm EDT, I'll make my annual appearance on the Internet Partnership Radio program, "Center of Circulation". You can listen in at http://www.ipr365.com/. I'm usually on for at least 45 minutes.

I'll have an update this afternoon.

Jeff Masters

26. I wish we could have fewer Palin threads and more on what ELSE is important
With such a glut of threads on just a few subjects, we miss so much.

800,000 Haitians - probably more - without the necessities of life, even food and water, and this is the only thread I have seen.
