Rick Santorum tells Ave Maria University students they are "warriors for God"
Looks like the religious culture wars are heating up since Sarah Palin was nominated as VP. Pardon me if I entertain the thought that this has been planned for a long time. The battle for the heart and soul of America truly is underway.

From Right Wing Watch:

Santorum Hails Ave Maria’s Religious Warriors

I find this speech chilling.

As the guest speaker at Ave Maria University's fall convocation August 29, Sen. Rick Santorum described the sources of what he called a "spiritual war" currently engulfing America. He told faculty and students at the Catholic college in Naples, Fla. that corruption is all around us, from our academics and culture, to politics and government. Even our nation's religious heritage and material prosperity have been corrupted to undermine the values on which America was founded, and "exterior attacks from radical Islam" complete the assault. Observing the current political climate he said, "This is not a political war, it is not a cultural war; it's a spiritual war."

...Explaining what he calls a "spiritual war," Sen. Santorum said, "The Father of Lies has his sights on what you would think the Father of Lies would have his sights on - a good, decent, powerful, influential country: the United States of America."

Among the institutions under spiritual attack, Sen. Santorum identified academia as the "first to fall." Our university students are being taught to "pursue no truths, or to deny the existence of truth," he said. Mr. Santorum said American has abandoned the Judeo-Christian ethic it was founded on. Consequently in his view a culture in which "poor behavior is made fashionable," has been Satan's subsequent success.

"Things are so bad and you are here," he said triumphantly. "God has chosen you to be here in a time when he needs soldiers the most; congratulations! ....The greatest thing is, signing up for His army is easy," he said, "but, the money's lousy, you'll be unpopular, you'll be ridiculed and you'll lose most if not every one of your battles."

Ave Maria is a self-sustaining city in Southwest Florida.

Ave Maria, Florida is a lot of things. To its developer, it will be a “compact, walkable, self-sustaining” city of 30,000 people.

To Ave Maria University, it is home to their new campus, the first major Catholic university constructed in the U.S. in 40 years.

To its founder Tom Monaghan, it will be a conservative Catholic city on a hill, where there’ll be no porn on the cable system, no condoms in the stores, and no contraceptives in the pharmacy.

To bitter faculty of Ave Maria Law School, it is the “edge of Corkscrew swamp” where Monghan and his supporters will forcibly relocate them from Ann Arbor.

It looked like this in 2007.

It looks like this today.

Rick Santorum "hailed the right-wing school for producing class after class of warriors for God who are desperately needed in order to win the “spiritual war” that is threatening to destroy America."

Too many believe that.

I seem to remember it was the founder of Domino's Pizza that started this place.

There's a place in LA named Joe Peeps. Really good New York pizza, yum! They used to put their pizzas in a box that read "This is not a domino." It was pretty funny at that time.

61. The kid who was last year's Ave Maria law school class president
is from Baton Rouge. His father had an affair with a woman he worked with and dumped his wife for her, but they all put on a hyper-religious facade and are "community leaders." The kid didn't fall far from the tree and is pretty much a scumbag too. And he's not very bright, hence attending a 4th tier law school.

He had to take some classes to prepare for seminary, as his first degree didn't meet all the requirements, and then he had to take some time off for health reasons.

A good priest is someone who does it out of love, not out of a need for power. He's doing it for love, and he's a good man.

deification for the Virgin Mary thus squaring
the Trinity.

If that happens they'll have to change the
nativity story a bit and poor Joseph is
out of the picture even as a bystander.

62. Yes
http://www.dailycatholic.org/issue/May/may14txt.htm

And now the Fifth Prophecy: Following are the exact words of Bernadette: "Your Holiness, the Virgin has told me that when the 20th century passes away, with it will pass away the Age of Science. A new Age of Faith will dawn around the world. Proof will come at last that it was Our Lord Who created the world and man, and this will be the beginning of the end for the scientists, in whom the people will cease to believe. Millions will return to Christ, and as the numbers of believers swell, the power of the Church will grow as never before. Also causing many to turn their backs on science will be the arrogance of physicians who use their knowledge to create an abomination. These doctors will find the means to combine the essence of a man and the essence of a beast. The people will know in their hearts that this is wrong, but they will be powerless to stop the spawning of such monsters. In the end they will hunt scientists down as ravening wolves are hunted. On the eve of the year 2000, a final clash between the followers of Mohammed and the Christian nations of the world will take place. A furious battle will be waged in which 5,650,451 soldiers are killed and a bomb of great power will fall on a city in Persia. But in the fullness of time, the sign of the cross will prevail and all of Islam will be forced to convert to Christianity. There will follow a century of peace and joy as all the nations of the earth lay down their swords and shields. Great prosperity will follow as the Lord showers His blessings down upon the faithful. No family on earth will know poverty or hunger. One person in ten will be granted by God the power to heal and they will cast out all sicknesses from those who seek their aid. Many will rejoice at these miracles. The 21st Century will come to be known as the Second Golden Age of Mankind."

Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 11:04 PM by Cerridwen
Oh yeah, it gets worse.

<snip>

At the convocation, Nicholas J. Healy, Jr., president of Ave Maria, introduced Sen. Santorum: "In an age when many Catholic politicians have compromised their faith in a perceived necessity for elect-ability or party support, it is a great honor to have with us a man who championed Catholic truths in season and out."

<snip>

This moral relativism extends even to those who would lead us, as exemplified by Barack Obama's definition of "sin" as anything "out of alignment with {his personal} values."

<snip>

Deacon Forrest Wallace, director of marketing at Ave Maria, said Sen. Santorum was picked to kick off the year because "he's a terrific speaker and has been on the side of some critical issues to us - pro-life and abortion issues."

"Sen. Santorum tends to be a hero to the pro-life world," he said, "and because of our strong allegiance to the {teaching authority} of the Catholic Church, our position is staunchly pro-life and will always be."

Nearest I can tell, as soon as they take out those Muslims and a few Democratic leaders, they're going after their non-Catholic allies. It might be interesting to watch if there's anyone left watching.

21st Century Crusades. "Stop the World! I wanna get off!"

23. The difference is in the media access...
We all heard of Joe McCarthy, but the hearings were not as much in our face as the right wing extremists are now. Not everyone had TV then with good reception, and we usually saw snippets of the hearings in the movie news in the theaters. Oops, giving my age away.

Not as prominently displayed for viewing as the extremists are now.

This country was NOT founded upon religion, Yes, the first colonies were religious nutters, but that was not when this country was established. It was established after the drafting of the Constitution, which last I checked, makes no mention to ANY religion or gawd. I think Santorum and his ilk are the father of lies, that deceitful fucking pig bastard.

What those people want to see, is American fall. Their end times bullshit is not at all possible without intervention and their meddling into Government affairs. Religion is evil.

Edited on Wed Sep-10-08 05:24 PM by DFW
I am feeling a little worn out to tell you the truth. I met with Helen at her home
in DC ten days ago. Since then, I was running back and forth between Washington and
Northern Virginia for a day (Monday was a holiday, I was told, not that I had any
of it!), then up to New Jersey and New York City for two days, then back to the Rheinland
(landed in Düsseldorf), then Monday down to Bavaria, backup to the Rheinland Monday night,
over to Brussels Tuesday, this morning down to Paris, and then back up to Brussels again,
where I am now, then all day tomorrow here in Belgium and then (I hope!!) back to the
Rheinland tomorrow night, where my wife may or may not remember who I am!! Hell, I hope
I can remember. I am getting too old for this kind of thing, I think. Even James Bond must
have been played by ten different guys by now.

Our partners here in NATO-land are positively aghast at the fact that this election is even
close (as they were in 2000). Where the choice is between a pair of candidates so very
obviously qualified to move into the job and a pair so obviously unqualified to move into
the job, to have it clouded up by all this completely ridiculous, irrelevant religious
malarkey is very frightening to them. Such things haven't held much sway in European politics
since the Spanish Civil War, and that ended in a very backward Spain in 1939. They expect
better of us. This SHOULD be an Obama landslide. This nation-patient is very ill if it
is not, and so far it looks like anything but a landslide, even if I still like our chances.

If Obama and Biden make it into the White House, they will have a lot of damage control to
set before their new Secretary of State. If it's McFailin' then we stand a good chance to be
written off as a nation for a generation. The rest of the world will come visit our National
Parks, buy our airplanes, play our rock music and watch our movies, but other than that, we
will be the biggest world has-been since the Roman Empire.

I'll give you a really foul example of that:

Saw a History Channel special on the lead-up to Hiroshima. A pilot was dropping napalm on civilian areas -- over and over again; this is before dropping the big one(s) -- and he felt kind of bad about burning all those innocent people to death.

He went to see his priest who said, "Well, if God let it happen, then it must have been His will."

I can just imagine what this school's curriculum might look like. Any Creationism majors out there?

48. McCain just turned the GOP over to the right wing religious extremists.
He did it deliberately. He knew he was losing, and he decided to go for broke. No matter what it did to the country.

49. As a practicing Catholic myself
I have accepted it as my God given duty to be sure every Catholic I have contact with anywhere, including at Church on Sunday as well as the parents of the kids we teach in religious education on Sunday morning, is well aware that supporting McCain/Palin is supporting anti-Catholics. Palin is a Pentacostal. They absolutely hate Catholics. And likewise, I have no use for Pentecostals or any other anti-Catholic religions. I've no doubt these Catholic kids at Ave Maria have no clue whatsoever who they are in bed with and who would cut their very throats given half a chance.

52. The right hate education
Among the institutions under spiritual attack, Sen. Santorum identified academia as the "first to fall." Our university students are being taught to "pursue no truths, or to deny the existence of truth," he said.

Seems to me that university - real university, not wingnut pizza school - is a place where people are encouraged to look for truth, rather than simply accepting what they're told. I can see why Santorum and his ilk would have a problem with that.

56. Monghan left Ann Arbor Twp because he could not get a 80 ft cross
Hope in his Ava Maria College near Naples, his cross is not so tall it interferes with the local airport. The 7-11 don't sell beer so remember that as you pass through.

57. Arrrgggghhhhhh!!!
One day, the Islamists and the Christian Righties are going to discover how much they have in common, and band together against the secularists and church/state separators. And may Whoever help us all if that happens!

free to worship as they choose. I see absolutely nothing threatening about this even though I do not support Santorum. What I see is alot of anti-Christian bigotry on DU. Being Christian does not mean being right wing. But bigotry is everywhere these days.

64. I think what people are objecting to is that politicians like Santorum DO equate being Christian
with being RW; and use so-called 'Christianity' to manipulate people into voting for RW-ers.

66. I agree with you. Rick Santorum is hardly a spokesman for
probably the vast majority of Christians, let alone Catholics.
