Anyone putting an Obama sign up here is a way to make sure it is not
stolen. Cover the posts with Vaseline or better yet that black goop that is used on automobiles. They won't be able to get them out of the ground and it will piss them off and make their hands all slippery.

I did this when my X-husband was screwing around with my water filtration system and I never had a problem again. After a few years when I had to change the filters I just wiped the Vaseline that was left off.

You can put the stuff on the bottom of the sign and the top too so they can't get it from there.

3. There are wireless motion sensors, if you are good with electronics
Something more low-tech would be to tie a heavy thread to it, and run it under your front door and tie the end to something, like a little bell.

4. The problem with that is it requires you to go outside and do something about it...
Putting vaseline or black grease on the posts would have an immediate impact on the person trying to remove the sign, especially the black grease. That stuff just does not come off the hands without great effort. Imagine getting back inside your car with those hands.

5. Yea but you are prepared with wipes and towels. And I am pretty much
talking about signs in your yard where it is easy to get to a sink.

6. I can't afford a motion sensor...or rather I don't have anyone to put one up
The string thing would work good though.

I really do need to get someone here to put motion sensors in the front and back. Ever since my divorce from Mr. bat shit crazy I leave the lights on in the front and the back all the time. The sides have motion detectors that someone else put in.

I use florescent bulb in case anyone was wondering.

12. Even better than the string thing...
Have a trip-line running from the sign to the gate latch to your back yard...filled with extra-large trained attack dogs...

8. Can you help with another vote? We need 2 more to get this to the front
page. I personally think it is a great idea especially since I stole a Bush Cheney one once, (I feel really really bad about it). But it was so easy that if I didn't take it someone would have,

OK What I did was wrong. But it made me think about how easy these things can be taken. If it were covered with Vaseline I would have had to wipe the crap on my clothes if I didn't have something in the car to use. Plus I would have left the thing where it was.

9. Take a small pot with cooking oil.....
chop up something volatile like jalapenos or better yet habanero peppers and cook low and slow for a couple of hours. Strain, now wipe down your sign...use latex gloves and let your imagination run wild; they might smoke a cigarette, rub their eyes, relieve their dingus, wipe their fanny, wipe someone elses fanny...this stuff doesn't rub off, it takes soap and water.

I would smear the posts with ]b]fifth wheel grease. It is a black, viscous, graphite bearing grease that does not wash off as it is designed to be water resistant, but has to wear off…extremely tacky.

Hard to see at night, as I assume that is when the vandals operate.

It ruins just about any fabric it touches, as it stains immediately and permanently. You need a strong solvent to even get that crap off your hands.

another....

Capsaicin cream or just habanero peppers buzzed with a little Oil of Olay and water in a blender. Paint the sign with the mixture where people are likeliest to grab it and pull it out. Keep the mixture around to repaint it after it rains.

The hot pepper won't harm anyone but it will hurt like hell if they rub their eyes or have to pee.

This is revenge. Nothing will prevent sign stealers from taking your property unless you are willing to set the sign into cement or do something illegal like electrify it. A security camera can catch the culprit's picture, but the capsaicin adornment will make him HURT.

As for legal remedies, just present the evidence from a security camera to the cops and say you want the prick charged with vandalism. An arrest record is punishment enough. The hot pepper helps. Just don't own up to it.

and...

Tanglefoot - The tube is about $4.95, and one brand even has a spray-on version.

It's sticky as Hell, and if I got it on me, I'd want to go home and try to get it off.

13. thanks
some good ideas - the spray-on tanglefoot might be an idea if I were to put up a dozen signs around busy intersections.

14. wow- these are great ideas
while volunteering for the campaign for change last weekend, someone told me about adding this comment to their signs- if this sign is stolen, I will be forced to send the Obama campaign more money. I think I like these ideas more, though!

15. What signs?
The campaign has made the decision not to spend its money on lawn signs, and to instead spend the money on campaign infrastructure - I don't know about you, but we have lots of Obama HQs in our battleground area (a good decision, I think)

The issue was raised recently at my local Dem Committee mtg, and the folks at the meeting beat up the cute young organizer something fierce once he explained this.

"Why no lawn signs?"

"You can't even tell McCain has an opponent!"

"That's awful!"

Fortunately, one of the sensible people at the meeting stood up and said "This is a good time for me to promote my fund-raiser being held soon, and tell you that ALL of the proceeds will go to BUYING lawn signs for the campaign"

So, bottom line, if you want lawn signs, you're going to have to be very lucky or buy them yourself.

(And then, when they're stolen, you might wonder if it's a McCain person or a fellow sign-deprived Obama fan)

16. Get a habanero pepper, cut it open, and rub the juice all over the sign
make sure that you wear disposable rubber or latex gloves while doing that and take them off without letting your skin touch any part that had contact with the pepper.

Your sign might still get stolen but the thief will get a very, very nasty surprise when rubbing his nose, eyes, or when peeing

17. Just get some of those wild blackberry branches and wrap them around the posts...
That will keep them from pulling your sign out AND they'll go home with a handful or two of needle sharp thorn splinters.

Hey, you do the crime, you get out your tweezers!

19. Put a security cam on the signs so you can post "moran" videos on YouTube.
Show the entire world what McCain supporters look like.

(In some neighborhoods you may need a pretty good supply of signs.)

20. my problem in 04 wasn't with them getting stolen
they were running over them. There are no curbs where I live, so in typical lazy redneck fashion, they would just pull off the road as they went by and run over my Kerry sign.

As a remedy, I let the grass and weeds grow up in front of the sign and hid an old small-bock chevy v8 cylinder head in the weeds. Checked the enxt day and some dumbass had obviously lost his oil pan on it.
