1. Well his brother Jeb and Kathleen Harris had a lot to do with it
Had we counted all the votes in the Florida we would have stopped Bush.

2. I know
And what I totally forgot was that Faux News reported it first and that the guy responsible for that was his cousin. And for some reason all other media channels repeated it.

3. SCOTUS put a stop to the FL recount
...when they should have sent the question back to the FL Supreme Court, which had already said the recount should continue. But the Repubs weren't going to stop until they got the answer they wanted and the SCOTUS gave it to them.

4. Yesterday I watched "Recount" for the first time.
Should check it out.
Even though its fictionalized, it gives a really good fact-based picture of just what happened in 2000.

(Plus the acting is phenomenal...)

Very good depiction of how things got so screwed up in Florida.

6. If we had a big-ass fight over the 2000 election, it would shatter the illusion of democracy.
In the United States, it is taken as sacrosanct that only dictatorships and rigged elections occur in other countries. If it occurred inside the United States, it would automatically discredit the enduring myth of American exceptionalism, and a lot of people are going to wake up very unhappy.

The worst nightmare people in power want is to have their subjects angry enough that they could lose control over the "peasants."

12. But don't you think democracy would have won?
By showing that really the people decided and not a handful for crocks?

17. I don't know. If people are apathetic enough and socially atomized enough, it can fail.
By "atomized," I mean people no longer possess shared values or a collective identity but rather see themselves as separate from other people and the problems they may have. In short, they see it as someone else's problem until it happens to them. Then they want help, but it's too late by then.

In such an environment, a dictatorship can arise, and people will say, "Well, I'm not politically involved anyway, so I have nothing to fear from the government." At the same time, someone is being sent to jail for challenging authority, but the rest don't care because it's not happening to them.

his movies may have flaws but he surely wakes up people.

I haven't seen his healthcare movie yet but I want to see it. I need to check out if it is avaiable on DVD in Germany already.
