NATIONAL CHECK IF I CAN VOTE DAY

hi all: I put this out on Saturday and last night. I am going to send this out at different times on different days in hopes of getting as much of a readership as possible.

I propose that all progressive and liberal organizations (DU, MoveOn.org, PDA, ACLU etc) and blogs, all Democratic county and state organizations and Democratic clubs declare October 1, 2008 NATIONAL CHECK IF I CAN VOTE DAY. Have these groups email, phone, write whatever it takes to nudge their member to check their voter registrations on that day. There was just an article in the news yesterday about 300,000 people finding out they aren't registered to vote in New Jersey when they though they were! We all know what happened in Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 2005 along with possible problems in Nevada and New Mexico and down ticket problems in Washington in 2004. I propose we do this and then have house party potlucks that evening to watch a film about vote cheating by the Republicans.

I feel that doing this would accomplish three goals. 1) the practical goal of working out the kinks in voter registering for our Democratic friends. Doing it this early would give time for those people who have problems to get them solved. Lots of states have 30 or 14 pre-registration requirements. 2) If we go to the press and have enough momentum with all these organizations (think of the total of emails alone that would be sent out) then we have critical mass to force the MSM to report it and make mention of the cheating 4 years ago. 3) With that many organizations being watchful and proactive it might put the Republicans on notice that we are being more vigilant about the sanctity of our votes this year.

I am asking everybody to help me, send emails to all the organizations that you are part of to get this rolling. I am not firm on the date...but was thinking Oct 1 would be a good one to do it. However I am firm that we need to make one day NATIONAL CHECK IF I CAN VOTE DAY to make the biggest impact possible.
