What the hell is wrong with people?
Edited on Wed Sep-10-08 10:59 AM by Texas Explorer
Have you guys seen the video of the hammer attack in the subway? Well, neverminding the lunatic who attacked, why is this (fairly large) guy running away instead of jumping on and subduing the attacker?

Why does this man allow this attack to continue?

Edited to add video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgL_mYC2DGk

1. Adrenalin
When you're in a situation like that, it's fight or flight, not subject to logic or critical thought.

I don't blame him. I've been there, gotten enough of a lick in to make an attacker let go, and run like hell.

Courage only happens when you're out of attractive alternatives.

6. "Courage only happens when you're out of attractive alternatives."
Hands down one of the wittiest and intelligent quotes I've ever seen on here. Kudos.

2. Could be one of a hundred reasons.
old
no health insurance
he knows the maniac with the hammer is *ucked up on drugs and he is no match for him
afraid
he's traveling with his grandson and wants to protect him

I don't know if I would go after a dude with a hammer either. Peace, Kim

3. Back in my day on the subway in NY, you did not get confrontational
with these guys. They'd stab you faster than look at ya. They're usually high. I remember not wearing any of my jewelry until I got to the office, they'd grab a necklace or bracelet right off of you. Very sad.

5. Ok There Mr. Rough And Tuff. But Why Do I Have A Feeling You Would've Been Hiding In A Corner?
Yup. Real easy to claim or infer otherwise on a website though.

13. It easy to sit here and say, if I saw this I'd do that
But until you are in a real life threatening situation a person doesn't truly know what in the hell they're gonna do..

Perhaps the guy running away is physically disabled, like back surgery it's quite common these days, or he just lacks physical strength or maybe he is just plain fucking scared and wants to see his wife and kids again.. who the hell knows.

14. So very true. No one knows what they'd do in a split second decision like that one
Edited on Wed Sep-10-08 03:10 PM by tom_paine
where so much is at stake, ie. possibly your life. Until it happens, that is.

Plus, how many times in NON life-threatening situations have we all made split-second decisions anbd said to ourselves later, "Shit I blew it! I should have done the other thing I was thinking."

I don't know about the rest of you, but even in non-threating situations, that has probably happened to me dozens of times.

Now add to that little reality the adrenalin and emotion that comes with just sitting there and suddenly madness and mayhem ensues...

Good post. It needed to be said. Bravo. :toast:

Ever seen that movie, "The Unforgiven"? It's an excellent movie that addresses issues like these and quite entertaining, too. A "realistic" Western, if you will.

If you haven't seen it, do so...it's great. But the people who really need to see it are the ones jumping all over this poor bastard when they might well have done the same thing in that situation, no matter how certain they were beforehand.

Nothing like the threat of being beaten in the head with a ball-peen hammer to help you really quick size up what's truly important, eh? Maybe the guy had a mentalpicture of his wife and kids flash through his head in that second, and was seized by the terror and pain that his loved ones would have to make their way without him...all because he stepped in to save a stranger.

I know lots of Dads, and I suspect everyone else does, too, who feel that way at this point in their lives. Not scared to die for themselves but of leaving their wife and kids to go on without them.

I'd like to clarify here that I am not condoning this amn's actions. Like most of the rest of us here, I too THINK that in such a situation with the guy's back turned I would look for weapon or object to bludgeon him with, or failing that, to do what one guy said he did above, throw a couple quick shot to stop the attack at least briefly then run like hell!

Yeah...I THINK. Talk is fucking cheap. Would I? I don't know, I've never been in a situation quite like that.
