Oh Joe, my heart went out for you...
CNN is preparing a program about Biden, and just on a lark, the interviewer asked him to read a paragraph from his book...

See it for yourself

4. Tears are falling here
I know all too well his pain. My 17 year old son Christopher was hit and killed while riding his bicycle on November 8, 2007, by a drunk driver fleeing the police. Senator Biden confirms what I'm slowly learning since that horrible night 10 months and 2 days ago, that we never forget, we never heal, but we can and must live on. I still struggle daily with the loss of my precious Christopher, but I can look at someone like Senator (and future VP) Biden and have some small measure of hope that I, too, can survive.
Thank you for posting this here. It helps.

6. And now my heart goes out to you. How sad and how courageous you are
Please accept my deepest sympathy. I know that these feelings are still very much raw.

And what impresses me is that Joe never "got over it". Just like you'll never "get over" Christopher. It's a process. Much love to you.

20. One quote from a great mother......
Edited on Wed Sep-10-08 01:22 PM by ccvirgo911
...has helped me understand the loss of a child:
"It has been said that time heals all wounds. I do not agree. The wounds remain. In time, the mind, protecting its sanity, covers them over with scar tissue, and the pain lessens. But, it's never gone".
~Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy~

I am heavily involved with MADD and POMC (Parents of Murdered Children). So I have tried to surround myself with those who can relate and understand, those who can help me to form a new existence without my boy.
Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers. I continue to pray for Senator Biden for his loss as well.

28. I think Rose Kennedy did a good job of explaining it --
as much as an emotion, feeling, loss of a love can be 'explained'.

Another thing that I feel badly for Biden: When his wife and daughter were in the accident, his sons were in the car and they were critically injured. That's why he was thinking about quitting the Senate - so he could be with his boys. You probably know, but he was sworn into office in the hospital at his sons' bedsides.

So now, Joe is seeing one of those sons shipping off to Iraq. Can you imagine? Almost losing him once, and seeing him go off to war.

Life is a tragedy at times. :(

19. I'm so sorry... I don't even know where to begin
To have your heart ripped out of your body like that... it hurts just to think about what you and your family are going through.

I'm so sorry. If there are grief support groups in your area, and if you think they might help, it might be worth a try to talk with people who know what you're going through. (On the other hand, many people find they don't help at all... it's such an individual thing.) I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Good clip, by the way.

10. The horrid
woman should not have asked him to read that. It is not something to toss around for public display.

I am sorry for Biden's tragedy and can't imagine his heartbreak having not lost a child.

11. She did not plan on this. Obviously losing his wife and child are part of who he is
and she was going to read it and, just asked him to read. Obviously, he was not aware of the raw emotions it was going to stir.

In the end, it shows him as a real human being. This certainly was not planned nor staged.

We will have to watch the whole program to appreciate it.

14. This has only really become widely known since Joe became Obama's
VP pick -- and to a certain extent when Joe was running for Prez.

He doesn't bring it up constantly, like certain POWs we know.

He's always said, that this -- and worse -- has happened to countless people, so he's not unique in his experience. McCain, on the other hand, would have us believe that it was he and he alone who suffered so terribly in that hateful war.

18. Didn't watch the video, but just guessing, and as a lifelong Delaware resident...

It's a moving story, but not one that Sen. Biden or anyone else wishes to dwell upon.

21. He read a paragraph from his own book
started reading and then had to stop, to compose himself. It was about talking marriage with Jill, asking her why would she want to marry him, knowing how much he loved Neilia. And Jill replied that because of this, because she sees how much he is capable of love.

Writing the story is not the same as actually watching him reading this. Was really heart wrenching.

And, no, it was not staged. The reporter was completely unprepared which, of course, makes this clip so much more powerful.

He was not prepared, either, started reading and then was flooded with the memories of that, and other moments.

27. Love *IS* about the lover more than the beloved. Jill apparently "gets it." Kudos for her.
It's a lesson we should all learn. The act of loving is healthy ... and it's NOT about the object of that love as much as it is about becoming a loving person. We have an enormous capacity for loving ... far more than most of us realize.

30. I just watched this and it was very moving. I love this man.
He is so real and my heart broke for him and what he had to go through. I only started really knowing anything about him when Obama picked him for VP. I always liked watching him straight talk on Chris Matthews or MTP but now I absolutely love him. Great guy.
