palin goes back to Alaska, mccain is on his own, and the crowds get smaller
and more hostile toward him

The novelty is starting to wear off

mccain can't run on the issues, because he voted with bush 90% of the time

The only strategy he can do is to distract, and that distraction has almost run its course

3. His Gimmick is gone
He's nothing without his Gimmick. Perhaps it will be obvious to more people that a Gimmick doesn't cut it in a presidential race.

4. The distraction ran back to Alaska.
