I can't watch. Is MSNBC really running video of 9/11, in real time, all morning?
They're replaying that horror, as CNN carries the reading of the names of those lost on that day by members of their families -- which takes, of course, sadly, so many hours? And then they toss their flowers into the pool; the pool is already filled with flowers, and there are many more to come.

Is this some slap at Keith Olbermann, who blasted the showing of footage of the Towers on 9/11 at the GOP Convention, and then again in a Special Comment last night? Is it a sensational display, a grab for ratings?

Who doesn't have those scenes seared into their memory until the day they die? Who wants to see them again? Who wants to relive that morning? Certainly not the families, for whom those images are images of their loved one's deaths.

And certainly not someone for whom the day brings personal memories of more than one father who took a final journey that day, to downtown Manhattan to work, leaving wives at home and at different workplaces, and children at school.

1. My TV is tuned in to the Senate. They are
in a quorum call, so I'm just relaxing listening to the classical music.

6. did MSNBC and other networks do this same thing last year?
or the year before that?

I'm thinking all this rehashed grief is just because it's an election year. And THAT makes me furious.

I'm over the grief. I want justice.

7. they just started playing at 12 Bush at the memorial today
but yes, before that, they had been playing the footage in "real time". I wonder if they'll go back to it. The only interesting thing is remembering how the news anchors in real time were commenting on what a failure in intelligence and airport security it was.

19. Also, that would be a reason to watch -- to take another look at events...
as they happened, for informational purposes.

8. I stopped watching that stuff
Edited on Thu Sep-11-08 11:17 AM by NikolaC
after the first anniversary. It is too painful to watch and makes me full of anger, frustration and rage. It just sickens me to see the ones who are responsible, for at the very least doing nothing to stop it when they could, posturing and making their speeches full of lies to make themselves look good. It makes me ill to see those who have used 9/11 to prop themselves up, start wars and make obscene profits, act like they are great patriots and like they care about the pain and suffering that has been caused as a result of that horrible day. The media is part of the problem and the whole thing just makes me want to :puke:.

9. Americans love to wallow in front of an audience
It's enough already. Seven years is a long time for the healing process to take place, and re-opening the wound every year does no one any good.

Do people think this sort of public spectacle actually helps anyone or anything?

Do they think that America will forget what happened that day?

I notice we don't commemorate the Oklahoma City bombings in such a repugnant display of bad taste, but, then, the guy who did that was an American, so I guess it all depends on who does the killing, huh?

18. They did the same thing last year.
Because I was in Manhattan on 9/11, I'd never seen the footage of what happened as it was aired on TV, because I was too busy being in the middle of it, and I was too traumatized to watch the incessant images immediately afterward. Kept the TV off for weeks. It was more than enough to smell the smoke, and see the posters of the missing all over the city, and experience the hushed, stunned existence as people tried to go about their lives. I did watch it last year, because it was the first time I felt emotionally ready to see it from that viewpoint, and to absorb how the news was reported. Spent the whole day crying my eyes out, but I felt that it was a turning point for me in my emotional recovery. Don't need to see it again, thank you very much.
