1. it is definitely a real advertising campaign
it's along the lines of the (presumably apocryphal) story of the sargeant who led his men into battle in ww1 w. the charge, "come on, men, do you want to live forever?"

considering that the services are life and death, i'm not sure it's entirely bad to appeal to the derring-do of those who actually wish to risk death and test themselves in combat, better to channel those energies and heroic fantasies in useful fashion


not everyone seeks the same thing, if navy wanted to recruit me, no doubt they'd offer something other than to chance to challenge myself in the teeth of death but i don't think i'm the kind of recruit they're looking for to build an effective naval defense :-)
