How well does milk freeze?
Silly question, but I have an extra half gallon and am thinking freezing it might prolong its life when/if we lose power.
Thanks!

5. I would believe it would depend on the fat content.
The fatty portions would probably not freeze as the rest would and would probably separate out.

If the milk is non fat or lower in fat it would probably freeze better.

You know they have powdered milk and UHT pasteurized milk that doesn't require refrigeration that are ideal for these situations.

9. It's 2%, so that might work. All the stores are closed now. Tried
to get evap but no go. I don't use much, but do have a new container.

6. ice cream...or ice milk...stir while freezing..
Not stirring will separate the fat and proteins from the water...

7. It freezes fine but will taste watery when thawed. Use it for cooking
if you have frozen it.

Disclaimer: This is based on my experience with milk left in the freezer in our cabin in CO in the 70s so we wouldn't have to drive 20 miles RT to the only grocery in the county when we arrived for our ski trips. YMMV, as I am sure milk is different now.

11. You are correct .
My Mom used to do this when we were kids, buy milk on special pricing and freeze for later. When you thaw it, it isn't the same. I hated that stuff, but was forced to endure it as if it were fresh milk.

10. I used to freeze it all the time...
when I would buy a gallon 'cause it was cheaper, but never used up the gallon before it went bad.

If the half gallon is full, drink an inch or two of it before freezing.

18. I have found this site useful
http://www.uga.edu/nchfp/how/gen_freeze.html

They have general and specific info on how to prep all kinds of food for freezing.

Good luck!

13. Don't forget to buy lots of salt
to put your eggs in - if you lose power. They'll stay fresh.

23. By what mechanism does salt on the outside of an egg keep it fresh?
If you put a pig's leg in salt=delicious. But eggs?

14. I used to buy the week's milk and freeze it,
although I had to take some out of each gallon because it would expand. I had 4 kids and they pretty much went through a gallon of milk a day.

17. I always froze milk but learned to pour a little out
of container first, it expands as it freezes and can put crack in the container.

The shaking you need to do is after it thaws, then it is just like new.

25. Giant Repuke does it here in Illinois
Oberweis, run by a puke. But the man makes magnificant milk and ice cream with home delivery.

I have not had it in eight years or so. But whenever I see I dream of it. It is that good.
