Republican coworker's statements...
Edited on Fri Sep-12-08 09:09 PM by djohnson
I was on a break with my Republican coworker today, who gets along with me despite our political differences. He lives across the border in Indiana for the low taxes, but drives to Chicago for his job. Huh, good thing for him Chicago is here otherwise he might be skinning squirrels for a living or whatever. Anyway, I was just curious what it takes to get through to Republicans. Here are some of his thoughts:

Regarding McCain graduating 894th out of 899 at the Naval Academy:
"What do you call a doctor who graduated at the bottom of his class -- a doctor! I'd rather have a surgeon who graduated from the bottom of his class at Harvard than someone who was 1st in their class at Prairie State."
The Moral: Republican voters have no understanding of the privileged of legacies in higher education, and no regard for the hard work of the millions who attend other colleges.

Regarding taxes:
"Yeah Obama says he's only raising taxes for people making over $250k, and will lower taxes for 95% of people, but people don't know whether they are part of that 5%. All they know is SOMEBODY's taxes are going to be raised -- they don't know if it's going to be them."
The Moral: Republican voters do not understand math or numbers.

Regarding national debt:
"Most people don't care how much national debt we leave to our children. Heck I know I don't."
The Moral: Republican voters have little concern for their kids.

After his last comment about not caring about his children I had to leave.

One ray of hope is that he is disappointed in the choice of Sarah Palin, but I don't know if he's able to comprehend the magnitude of bad judgment that McCain made and will probably vote for him anyway. I mean, since he can't figure out whether he's in the top 5% or not, I doubt he can figure out that. He's definitely not in the top 5% I can tell you that.

2. The last one is why I want a bumper sticker that says...
"Obama/Biden: Because I don't hate my children."

3. I think Republicans are people who are emotionally or psychological disturbed
They are obsessed with order, military-like authority and hierarchy, they feel they either have to serve someone or be the boss, that there should be no equality, they idolize killers, and love violent mythologies. Were it not for the fact that the world hates Nazis and even the word is mentioned with caution, Republicans would associate with all their beliefs, since they share many of them.

5. They have trouble with empathy
A common symptom of serial killers like David Berkowitz. They care about little outside their own family, and as this republican shows - will often put themselves even before their own children.

4. I used to work with a guy who sounds much like your
co-worker. He listened to Rush in the morning and Hannity in the afternoon and his brain was gone.
One winter day was exceptionally cold here in Southern Cal and he went on and on about how that "proved" there was no global warming.

The ignorance and stupidity is sometimes just overwhelming.

7. He does listen to talk radio during his break
IOW, he's informed by republican information sources. They are a bunch of brainwashed republican solders. I can't discern much humanity in him, I don't really know him that well, but he opens up to me so I thought I'd comment on how these people think.

6. You Can't Fix Stupid...
My condolensces for living so close to Indiana.

It sounds like for every answer, he'll find another excuse...which probably blankets the real reason...racism.

If he wants to see how much he will save (I assume he earns less than $200Gs a year)...show him this website:

http://alchemytoday.com/obamataxcut/

...and i'll bet he doesn't believe it anyway...but for your own peace of mind, might be worth doing anyway.

Sounds like the best hope here is he either votes third party or not at all...he's gonna find one excuse or another not to vote for Obama. While I hate throwing around the idea that those who won't vote for Obama are racist...and there are plenty who aren't...they hate everyone...or so "raptured" with Grandma Barracuda that they are on another planet anyway...it's something to keep in mind as the feelings run deep...especially in "ex-burb" areas. I knew people from "The Region" over the years and their contempt for blacks...especially from either Gary or the South Side was sometimes visceral. These days you keep it under covers, but it's still there.

Cheers...

8. That would be a great campaign slogan...
Another one is:

"Whatever promises they make, they're too dumb to keep."

But that might be too many syllables.

He'd probably be too frightened to open it thinking it has something to do with black magic.

9. The last comment reminds me of remarks by my coworkers...
...about global warming. Two different older guys, both Repukes, on separate occasions, concluded their arguments against the existence of global warming with statements along the lines of "...and even if it does exist, what do I care? I'll be dead by then!"

Both of these men are grandfathers.

10. Oh, something just occurred to me.
This is sort of an epiphany, so take it or leave it.

To quote myself:

"Republican voters have no understanding of the privileged of legacies in higher education, and no regard for the hard work of the millions who attend other colleges."

"Republican voters do not understand math or numbers."

"Republican voters have little concern for their kids."

Based on my little talk with this Republican soldier, I think this is the message Democrats need to drive home to get to these people. I think articulating these issues might somehow get through to them.... Just a thought.

Unless they're unborn. Then they care very strongly.

14. Sounds just like a Boortz listener
I'd suspect the coworker guy's more of a closet objectivist/libertarian than a republican, based on those last two things he said.

Anyone who can say "people don't know whether they are part of that 5%" with a straight face needs to drop their current job and audition for movies. As for the "most people don't care how much national debt we leave to our children," I've found that its easier to dance on the tip of a needle than it is to explain to someone with kids why not caring about the debt is not only a form of child abuse, but against their best interests as well. But some people just won't ever understand.

15. Boortz actually used to be pretty entertaining..
When he was just local to the Atlanta area and before he swallowed the neocon koolaid like a boa constrictor.

I recall he had the head of the Atlanta water system on the phone one day swearing on a stack of Bibles that there was not a trace of dihydrogen monoxide in the Atlanta water system.

I had to park my truck before I ran into someone head on from laughing.

And he used to give the Bible thumpers a hard time too.

Then there was the bit about when someone brought homemade brownies to the station when he was at WRNG, that was a hoot.

After Boortz went syndicated he lost his humor and became just another Republican shill.
