Journalists, Debaters and the like: what is the significance of her repetitious "Charlie"
Was that suppose to endear her to him?
Bring herself up to his level?
Or nothing to it/just coincidental?

Seemed somehow strange.

1. Buying time while she desperately grapples for a response
an old debating trick so I'm told.

3. I think it's what mitchum said earlier--typical "assertiveness" tactic taught at leadership seminars
You know, "Knock 'Em Dead!" and all that.

4. Pure Dale Carnegie. Use a person's name as often as
possible to sell yourself.

5. It is a highly annoying
sales technique. It affects an unwarrented familiarity and is like fingernails on a blackboard.

13. Ah yes, like those telemarketing calls where the script has
the caller addressing you by name about every third word. Why does anyone think that works?

8. Did he address her as Governor?
I didn't see the interview so I don't know how he addressed her. But from a psychological standpoint, using a person's first name puts them in a "one down" position if they are expected to address you by your title.

In other words, if he addressed her as Governor and she replied with Charlie, she was trying to establish dominance.

Also makes it appear that she's communicating to him instead of bloviating at him.

Then he and his guests had a blast with it. KO had an edited clip of her repeatedly saying Charlie.

19. As others have noted, it is a technique used by con artists.
Edited on Sat Sep-13-08 01:00 AM by ConsAreLiars
Whether taught by the Dale Carnegie types or the Irish Travelers or at a Republicon Training Session or written into some marketing script, it is intended to convey the message that "I am your (more powerful) friend and here to help you and am in (or will be in) a position to help (or hurt) you."

When over-used, it can look a bit desperate and deceptive and become counter-productive. Sort of like the more generic "My friends."

(edit trite typo)

20. NEVER trust a person who uses your name repeatedly like that
They are either trying to manipulate you or sell you something you don't want or need. It's creepy.

23. You are exactly right. Imagine having a conversation with someone who calls you by first name that
often! Anybody would be creeped by that! 2 or 3 times in 10 minutes would be convivial...more than that is just wrong.
