Very disturbing if you've seen the images of this night-time hurricane.

1. isn't that the area where "certain death" was predicted?
That's scary.

3. This is from the Houston Chronicle:
About 40 percent of the city's 58,000 residents ignored calls to evacuate. And now they're phoning for help and getting this response, "We can't help you." I fear it's going to get quite grim. City Manager Steve LeBlanc went so far as to ask the media not to photograph "certain things" in the aftermath, referring to the possibility of dead bodies.

5. If anyone in my family did that and lived, I'm afraid I'd have to kill them.
What is the deal here? Could they not afford to leave?

6. You don't live on little ol' Galveston Island and not have a way to leave.
This isn't the inner city. You could WALK to the mainland or easily ride a bike over and stay in a shelter. People just think they've been through plenty of storms and they'll get through this one.

7. The reporter I'm listening to is describing calls to 911
that can't be responded to, including one where the caller said the house was falling apart around them.

Geeze.

8. Unless things have changed
Isn't there only ONE way out of Galveston?
Other than the ferry from Galveston to Bolivar Peninsula which I would think would have been closed.
Unfortunately, that many choosing to stay behind probably made it easier for the ones that chose to leave.:(

10. I heard from my friend in Texas City that the levees are holding, and local area radio
says that the surge levels have been lower than predicted, on the order of 8, 10, 12 ft rather than 15, 20,+.

That is very good news for Galveston.... maybe the Seawall was able to hold back the worst of it.

No power here in west houston, so I am only on a few minutes at a time.

11. The only problem...
is that there is no Seawall on the back side of the island. Once the winds are coming from the northwest towards Galveston, the bay water is going to be pushed onto the island. That's what happened with the storm of 1900. Of course, the storm of 1900 was already hugely devastating just from the initial part of the storm. But it only got worse later on. It does seem that the entire area might get fortunate if that report on the surge is true.

12. Glad to see that you're okay, Lisa!
It does seem that maybe the surge didn't rise as high as they thought. Still keeping my fingers crossed!
