Pssssst......Hey, Consumer.......lend me your ear.....
You know what REALLY p*sses me off? We, 'the people' USED to be referred to as "citizens".

Now, "we the people", are COMMONLY ~ without a blink of an eye ~ referred to as 'consumers'.

---------

And if you don't know/understand the distinction/subtlety behind being referred to as a citizen versus a consumer, you better "edumacate" (as george w, would say....) yourself, REALLY FAST!!!!

I could provide the links to a dictionary, but, well.......(not most DU'ers) but SOME OF YOU need to do your own research/'figuring'....looking words up in a dictionary that you're not 'quite sure the meaning of'.

Peace,
M_Y_H

1. Hadn't you heard? Shopping is patriotism in action.
Only good consumers make good citizens. Don't worry, go shopping.

4. I'm SURE you forgot the :sarcasm: thingy......, correct?
But some people don't "Get it". They will let themselves and their rights get totally trounced upon!

Young republicans will be the first to go, so I guess it's not all bad...... (I keed, I keed.......)

13. We have been conditioned to 'need' things.
'The pair of boots you just can't live without ...' Besides, I'm positive the current pResident advised me that when I shop, I am fighting the TERRORists who mean to destroy my country.

When Americans are willing to cede our rights as citizens under our Constitution in exchange for (perceived) SECURITY we maybe have become consumers rather than citizens. No?

and yes, the sarcasm thingy was implied ...

6. Credit card ad: "We're a nation of consumers...and that's okay."
Fucking hell, it is not. That ad is like a bartender saying, "You're an alcoholic...and that's okay. Belly up!"

Madness.

12. I am an alcoholic, and it IS ok.
Ironically, I'm a bad citizen, because I'm a bad consumer.

It must be the booze...

9. Things, IDEAS can be used for "good" or for "evil"
Please consider/look up the definitions of:

Citizen

Consumer

Assimilate

Intent

How can these words be used for 'good'? How can they be used for 'evil' intent?

(all intelligence is good :-) Please don't ever reprimand anyone who seeks to know/understand/explain).

Peace,
M_Y_H

14. This is a sore point with me...
there is a BIG difference between being a citizen and being a consumer. I am not on this earth to just consume and I bitterly resent that implication.

15. To those at the top of our society...
That is exactly what we are. Consumers.

"Citizens" is a word that conjures up images of people taking an active role in their nation, especially in it's governance. People who volunteer for community projects, people who consider every action they take within the greater framework of how it impacts the society they live in. Such people conserve and recycle, they don't litter, they are activists in the truest sense. They advocate for rights for those who are being deprived of them, and responsibilities for those who deny them. They are the very essence of "We the people".

"Consumers" on the other hand are brainless, distracted purchasers of goods. They are easily manipulatable, and easily fooled. They will cheerfully and reliably spend 30% more than they make, whether their annual income is $20,000 or $200,000. They adore their televisions and their iPods, and as long as you control the information flow they will not question the motives of those at the top of society.

The people at the very top have no interest in creating a better world. In that sense, they are as predictable and short-sighted as the consumers they manipulate so easily. They crave money and power, and as such the "consumer" is a far better thing for the masses to be than a "citizen". Know this Americans. They want you to all be good little consumers. However, if you value the world you live in, if you love your children and care about kind of society you turn over to them, if you believe in the American ideals and dream they sold you on back in elementary school, if you are a patriot, it is your RESPONSIBILITY to be a citizen instead.

Asleep we may dream, but AWAKE we can create.
