Chuck Tobb on Matthews' show speaks about hidden racial hesitence among white working class voters
He postulated that it is a small number, but as states like Michigan tighten up, he could imagine a number of white, working class voters voting straight Dem ..... except for Obama.

1. Does he mean the way Iowa Caucus attendees did?
 Maybe...just maybe the times are changing?

4. Unfortunately, not all working class white voters
are like Iowa Caucus dems.

I'm not surprised by this suggestion, and as someone else posted, I'm sure Obama's campaign kept this in mind.

2. I'm afraid he may be right and we better face it...but I also think
the Obama Campaign has had a handle on this from day 1...it is not a surprise and they have factored it in to their strategy. It is a sad fact of life in this country but Obama will overcome it.

3. Sadly...he may be right
Because of that, he said in Michigan, for example, Obama will need to be at 48% to counter that racial bias.

5. Using Iowa as an example of "white" is not wise.
Iowa is "white" state which has never had a large minority of any kind.

As a result they have never had the same experiences as states with
large minority groups.

For years there was a very liberal thread in Iowa. At one point
they even tried to import African Americans.

All I am saying is Iowa is not a good measure of "White Thinking".

13. To a person, every Iowan I have ever met ahs been more conservative than me and mostly ......
.... color blind.

I have never sensed a hint of prejudice in the Iowans I've met.

6. Important to get the younger generation vote out then
because they seem far less prejudiced than their elders.

7. I'm ashamed to say it because I'm an old white woman, but I
suspect he's right. I've never been a prejudiced person, but I've sure known a lot of people who were. I've always known there were good & bad people in every race, gender, and creed. Each one has their own reasons for how they feel and act, and those that behave the opposite of what "WE" believe are considered bad.

I think the "anti black" opinions have diminished a lot since I was a kid, but they're still there in some people.

It's sad to say, but I'm afraid racial bias will only go away when the people who subscribe to that opinion die! It is a positive note though, than MOST of them are already OLD! It won't be many more years until they're gone! I can only hope the people who have their own prejudices against other religions, the other gender, or even a different age from theirs, will also die in a foreseeable time!

8. I have an uncle that lives in Boston that is as solid Democrat as there is
He is in his eighties and is extremely reluctant to vote for Obama. He may yet do so but so far he says he just can't bring himself to do so..He has voted Democratic most his life and is an aquantance of Ted Kennedy which he often brags about, yet he still harbors some ancient thought processes. I fear there may be many like him.

9. Not to wage a race war
Not to wage a race war, but I really don't see any difference from the white working class voters that won't vote for Obama being any different than the 95% plus black vote that Obama will get. If you play with identity politics, you get pretty dirty pretty quick.

11. Except the "black" vote has been split that way for all Democratic candidates, not just black ones.
If Blacks voted fifty-fifty Republican-Democrat your argument might have merit but since they vote 90% Democratic for White Candidates your point is moot.

15. Absolutely true
Some folks have based their self worth on being white. Sad but true.
