http://www.guidrynews.com/story.aspx?id=1000012023Judge Yarbrough reported that the rumors of hundreds of bodies did not materialize, although there have been deaths that have not been tallied.
The community of High Island, which carries that name because of the elevation of the area, fared pretty well. The nearby community of Gilchrist was totally wiped out.
"Before the storm we had approximately 250 to 300 structures in the Gilchrist area of the peninsula. The on-site land survey yesterday says we have eight structures standing. We don't have any debris in Gilchrist; it's gone. It's in the Intracoastal (Waterway), it's in Beaumont, it's gone. There is nothing there."
Judge Yarbrough said that it is hoped that the peninsula will be vacated by the end of the week, and residents who have thus far refused to leave will be removed by force, if necessary. "They won't be arrested and taken to jail," Yarbrough said. "They will be taken to San Antonio."
