State warns deadbeat parents they could lose licenses (driver's, fishing, professional, et al)
State warns deadbeat parents they could lose licenses

NASHVILLE — NASHVILLE -- The Tennessee Department of Human Services has sent letters notifying more than 15,000 parents -- including about 4,500 in Shelby County -- who are not paying child support that they face losing their driver's, professional and recreational sports licenses if they don't pay up soon.

The notices inform parents that if they are behind at least $500 in child support and haven't made a payment in more than 90 days, they could lose their state-issued licenses, DHS announced Tuesday.

"We are absolutely committed to making sure children in this state receive their court-ordered support," said Human Services Commissioner Gina Lodge. "Having a child means taking responsibility for that child, and it is appalling that so many parents are walking out on that duty. License revocation is a wake-up call that works for thousands of parents who have been ordered, but are not paying their support."

More than 20,000 licenses of various kinds are currently at risk. Parents who face the loss of their driver's, professional or recreational licenses include registered nurses, real estate agents, security guards, and teachers. Revocation letters have been sent to non-paying mothers and fathers in every county in Tennessee, covering more than 4,500 cases in Shelby County.

1. the response will be
"how can we earn money to pay support if you take our license?"

Of course, the fact that when they WERE earning money they didn't pay their support will be ignored in favor of this excuse.

Just an observation from one who was there ;)

3. I over paid my child support, and they did zip to get my money back
said it was up to me (even though it wasn't my fault and it was theirs and the X's).

I wonder if I can make the child support people lose their licenses until I get paid back :)

4. I doubt many people will have a problem with that

I wouldn't. *see below, I do have a problem with that*

But let's not lose sight of the fact that the overwhelming problem is the other way around ...

ETA: I have to edit my response. For some reason I read that as your X losing her license until you got your money back. I really have no response to your thought that the employees of a state program to help children should lose their licenses because of your situation. That's like saying that bank tellers should lose their jobs because you wrote a check too large and they cashed it? Is that your point?

9. There is a firearms license?
 I guess I am and have been illegal because I have never owned a "firearms license".

10. The yellow card that the Firearms, Tobacco, etc. Agency issues.
Otherwise you are not even permitted to possess a weapon.

11. Never heard of any such critter.
Never had one and never been asked for one. Never received anything like what you mention when purchasing a firearm. Is there a test needed to qualify, or age requirement or ????

12. I had to help a client get one.
Big background check, have to have at least two people vouch for your character, etc. You can't buy a firearm (legally) or possess one without this card. It's registered with the local police as well as the Firearms, Tobacco, and Alcohol Agency, and of course there's an FBI check on the applicants as well.

The loss of this card, even temporarily, makes you break the law for possessing firearms without it.

5. They better not try and take them huntin' permits away. They will stir up a mess of trouble
going after a man's gawd-given right to blast little varmints with automatic weapons.

7. Bad policy. Case in point
Edited on Thu Sep-18-08 10:25 AM by kickysnana
Family in my childhood neighborhood, second marriage, guy had a small car repair garage. His new wife worked with him. Business went down. Child support for his first two children got in arrears. He paid but not everything the court stipulated. The state took the licenses for the business. They moved the business to their home. The neighbors looked the other way because there were 3 children in the home. The state took his drivers license and then later put him in the workhouse. No income. She was too small to do the heavy work. Kids too small to help. She did not graduate from high school and could not find any other job. They had a very small home that had been moved in eons ago that was a houseboat at one time. They lost the house. Now they are homeless. Good job making it look like they were doing something when they put two families on the street.

This law was for men who had large incomes and were hiding it but it catches the little fish and drowns them.

8. Tough! He could've gone to court and gotten the order reassessed and if he couldn't
Edited on Thu Sep-18-08 10:37 AM by Breeze54
afford the child support in the first place, why did he have more kids?

His priorities are screwed up and his first family comes first!

14. They "put him in the workhouse"? Are we in Victorian England?
I didn't realize there was such a thing in America, in this day and age.
