In today's Asheville Citizen-Times. The guest columnist wants to know "Why do the Democrats and prime time media keep trashing a woman who's made it so far on sheer guts, willpower and smarts".

I guess I'm not a "true woman"---and I'm really glad I'm not!

Sarah Palin is, indeed, "a woman who's made it so far on sheer guts, willpower and smarts" - I see no point in denying this. Her selection as VP may well have been largely motivated by her gender, but becoming a state governor is still an impressive achievement.

Democrats do, indeed, "keep trashing her", and the prime-time media at least in the UK is far from unambiguously positive (although "keep trashing" doesn't appear to be accurate).

The reason, which the columnist has presumably deliberately overlooked, is the political policies she advocates.

Neither gender nor success is relevant; the reason to trash her is because she's anti-choice, creationist, anti-social justice, pro-war etc

ANY woman who rises to "power" by batting her eyelashes, flashing a smile and showing major leg makes me barf.

I have a lot of respect for the Pro-Life position, although I don't agree with it. In general, it isn't Palin's politics that offend me; it's her hypocrisy. Unless you think it takes guts to bat eyelashes, flash a smile and show major leg, I think most men are simply BLIND to the fact that she is wielding her sex appeal as a tool to get what she wants. And she's not about to admit it, even though it's blatantly obvious to every woman in America who is just as "gutsy, persistent and smart" as she is... or moreso, but can't get anywhere near as far because they aren't beauty queens.

There's a difference between ignorant and stupid. I think she's woefully ignorant. But I would NEVER call her stupid.

She's all that. I take exception to "smart" - since I don't agree that "scheming" is synonymous.
