I'd like to say I am being wholly sarcastic, but only half at most. Yes, half at most...

Ignorance is bliss (right up until the blindsiding, which may yet still be years or even a couple decades off for many people) and in my seven years of Paul Revere-ing to many people, perhaps as many as hundreds, and I have seen that goofy glazed ignorant look more than a few times.

Sometimes I am envious. It must be nice to be so clueless about such important shit. So impervious to facts and reason. Like a nice warm cocoon. Kind of feels nice just talking about it, visualizing it...shelter from the storm can be ignorance of the storm's very existance...right up until the blindsiding.

I am not condoning the idea here, mind you, just toying with it. Call it a thought experiment.

But therein lies the problem. Bushies, Nazis, Commies, Khmer Rouge, Pinochetistas, all of them variations and only differing much in degrees and methodology, but not their overall "place in history - with all the other enemies of freedom and the enlightenment. Point is, all of them end with THE BLINDSIDING. The betrayal of everything the fools were told by the Bushies/Nazis/whoever turned out to be 180 degrees untrue and they fell for it right up until the end, most of them.

Then the suffering, whatever form it will be this time around, will come back as it always does to at least a third of the Loyal Bushies/Nazis/Commies/Whoever. They will realize they are betrayed but now also enslaved by the very chains they laughed at as they placed them on others, metaphorically-speaking and sometimes literally.

Damn it. That dumb old history knowledge again. Anyone got a claw hammer I can do a self-lobotomy with? I just want to fit in...

I too wonder if it wouldn't hurt so much, or matter so much, if I hadn't been taught that the key to being a real patriot is to ask questions, not accept platitudes, and to want your country to strive to be the best not just economically but ethically as well? I wonder if I would be still be crying myself to sleep sometimes or over eating lately out of nervousness? Maybe if I hadn't been taught that our goal worldwide should be to be respected by our neighbors, looked up to as the example of what freedom can accomplish, and strive to take care of all our citizens, and believe in "equality and justice for all", I wouldn't be?

Right now, I can't help wonder if I was lied too, because these past eight years, have left me pondering whether the majority really value these things or not?

The other thing that gets me is when people make the comment, "well which party is in control of Congress, and who is President, doesn't really affect our daily lives, so just go with the flow and see what happens."

How can they look at what's going on and not understand that this sure damn well IS going to affect everyone's life? :shrug:
