palin's password.... 'popcorn'. Yeah, she will be good with security.
Palin’s “popcorn” Password is a National Security Problem
September 18, 2008 – 10:15 am

Sarah Palin, a contender for the second most powerful post in the world, used the password “popcorn” for her email account.

In an effort to avoid government prying, Palin used Yahoo! Mail for state business (Woah, when did republicans get concerned with privacy?). This is a problem because Palin’s use of a 3rd party account hinders political transparency. But that’s not what bothers me.

What bothers me is that the person who is “one heartbeat away” from being in charge of my safety is using a seven character dictionary word as her password.

Since this is a dictionary word, cracking the password took maybe ten minutes of real work and an hour of password cracking. But even besides that, this password is seven digits with no caps and no special characters, which means it could be brute forced by Best Buy’s worst computer in about a day.

The email hacking was credited to Anonymous, group spawned from 4chan which is famous for such memes as Lolcat, Rickrolling, and it’s Anti-Scientology crusade.

Sarah, you don’t run a state business out of Yahoo. 4chan is a bored internet group who poses no national security threat. But if they want to cause problems in the future, I hope you’re not the one who’s in charge of security.

3. What an odd password.
Don't most places make you have at least one number in there to throw off hackers?

5. That was not her password. That was the password the hackers changed it to. (add)

The fact that she used a Yahoo! account says more about her lack of judgement than anything.

15. Not only stupid, but illegal
Problem is, she must have deleted all of the emails before it was hacked.

This is why I think Rove or a Rovian might be behind this.

17. Not sure Rove - may be a Rovian though
Although, Rove recently came out against McCain - and that might have been a ploy to cover for this...

7. Nope, that's what the password was changed to...
Edited on Thu Sep-18-08 04:54 PM by bobbert
Yahoo offers a password recovery tool, but all of her information is posted somewhere on the web, it's all public domain now.

To quote the guy that did the hack:

after the password recovery was reenabled, it took seriously 45 mins on wikipedia and google to find the info, Birthday? 15 seconds on wikipedia, zip code? well she had always been from wasilla, and it only has 2 zip codes (thanks online postal service!)

the second was somewhat harder, the question was “where did you meet your spouse?” did some research, and apparently she had eloped with mister palin after college, if youll look on some of the screenshits that I took and other fellow anon have so graciously put on photobucket you will see the google search for “palin eloped” or some such in one of the tabs.

I found out later though more research that they met at high school, so I did variations of that, high, high school, eventually hit on “Wasilla high”...

11. I guess you use
pgp whole disk on every machine you touch, encrypt every email, use two factor RSA authentication and a ssl vpn (no split tunnel) to access anything remote, and run a read only vm image that resets on boot....

No?

There is no justification for what was done. If it was done to you, you would be pissed.

All that shit can be peeled back technically without you knowing or with your cooperation (from a capacitor attached to your body).

Nothing people make is secure.

12. So you have no problem with a Governor doing state business on a Yahoo email account?
*THAT* is what the real story is here... she got exposed, just like Rove and the rest of the criminal repiglicans that used the RNC servers..

Why aren't you pissed about *that*?

Please save your faux outrage and righteous indignation for something more suitable...

18. I saw ZERO
in the scrapes that were posted. I prefer my home to federal prison so I would not download an export from her account, if one exists.

If there was wrong doing the evidence is now tainted by these doofuses.

They just did her a huge favor, get it?

27. So, just because YOU didn't see anything, it means there's nothing there?
That's not a very rational way to go about things. Do you know what all the hacker copied and saved? I read that the chan4 website deleted a lot of things that were posted.

Do you see all of the "@alaska.gov" email addys in her list?

23. If this were done to you you'd be mad because you had been stupid.

This has nothing to do with hackers.

This has to do with the person who selected Yahoo as the vessel of the WHOLE STATE OF ALASKA'S FUTURE.

What if Yahoo had a enron-style rolling backout just before she needed to email for state biz?

25. You would be surprised
how slack security can be for banks and governments.

Do you have any emails that back up that statement. I looked around the internets a few days back and saw nothing (within a reasonable realm of sites) that showed state business.

Maybe it will come out in trial, for the person who breached the account.

But at least she uses email, and maybe the 'internets.'

And next time I'll bet she comes up with a Cracker Jack password.

26. Her password wasn't "popcorn"
The kid that got into her inbox reset her password to "popcorn".

Popcorn - get it?

The details are in this article: http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2008/sep/18/tennessean-state-reps-son-contacted-palin-e-mail-p/

The alleged hacker, using the e-mail address rubico10@yahoo.com, posted Wednesday to a forum on the website 4chan about how he used Yahoo! Mail's password-recovery tool to obtain the Alaska's governor password.

"i am the lurker who did it, and i would like to tell the story," rubico10@yahoo.com wrote.

The hacker guessed that Alaska's governor had met her husband in high school, and knew the Republican vice presidential candidate's date of birth and home Zip code, the Associated Press reported.

Using those details, the hacker tricked Yahoo Inc.'s service into assigning a new password, "popcorn," for Palin's e-mail account, according to a chronology of the crime published on the Web site where the hacking was first revealed...
