They tell me the CH-47 is a much improved helicopter...
...as compared to the models used 38 years ago in Vietnam. All I can say is that yesterday, my brother, a combat vet from the 101st repeated what he told me about them back then. He said that boonie rats would rather stay on the perimeter during a firefight and usually sent cherries back to direct in the shithooks and release their cargo slings. They felt they were safer being shot at than standing under one of "those bastards".
A bunch of us were sitting at the bar at Sam's Cafe not long ago when some footage of shithooks came on the big teevee. Just like a switch had been flipped, we all started telling stories about those fucking things.
2. I must say I have always had a positive opinion of them

My Huey got shot down it a hot LZ (I was the crew chief). No crew injuries but we had to take the M60s off and join the Infantry for a few hours until things settled down enough to bring in a Chinook. They got us and our ship the hell out of there. Those butterfly handles suck on the ground.
3. I never said they're not better then nothing....
I implied they are a platform almost older than sliced bread and that in their prime they were not universally loved....I'm real happy your personal ass got out. And I'm pissed that 7 troops were killed in something originally described as a "hard landing"....
