Poll: GOP brand making comeback
New polling suggests that the Republican Party is beginning to regain some of its luster and, perhaps as important, is experiencing a surge in excitement among its political base.

A new poll by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press reports that independent voters have an equally favorable opinion of both parties, 50 to 49 percent, a one-point edge for the GOP. That compares to an 18-point Democratic advantage as recently as August, a wide gap that had generally held for more than a year.

And half of registered voters overall now have a favorable opinion of the Republican Party, the highest GOP ranking in three years. Slightly more voters, 55 percent, continue to have a favorable view of the Democratic Party.

The GOP convention and the selection of Sarah Palin as John McCain's running mate have also generated considerable enthusiasm among the party rank-and-file. Pew found that three in four Republicans express satisfaction with their presidential choice. In June, only half said the same.

The findings come as the Gallup Poll recently found that the Democratic generic lead among voters, when asked which party they prefer to control Congress, has withered to only 3 points, 48 to 45 percent. Democrats had a double-digit generic congressional advantage on the eve of the midterm elections.

5. The surge in excitement is clearly due to the injection of Sarah Palin into McCain's boring campaign

But if it's true that this isn't just a blip and represents an actual trend in attitude toward the Republican party among independents as well, then this country is in serious trouble for a loooong time to come, because apparently, the American people will buy a 5-pound bag of bull droppings if it's marketed just right.

:hi:

EDIT: In any case that's why we need to hang all of these national failures squarely around republicans' collective necks.

8. "New Polling"
Polls are taken over a period of several days and it takes a while to publish them. There's no way these can take into account the bailout business, etc. We won't get polling on that for a while. And besides polls rarely reflect reality perfectly. Because of the groups they target, the margin of error is much larger than they let on.

12. No one can fuck up a sure thing like the Democrats
time after time they manage to breathe life back into Republican candidates and the GOP in general by failing to draw clear distinctions between the two parties on matters of policy and philosophy. The Repukes then hide behind the "they're just as bad as we are!" argument when they've clearly been corrupt or incompetent, and they never fail to sneak in some disqualifying attacks at the height of a campaign, eg: our Democratic opponents are UnAmerican | Internationalist Commie-Socialists | sexual deviants who should be watched closely if not placed in preventive detention, and the Democrat(s) lose their lead and end up wondering how "they did it to us again!"

I hate to say "the Democrats deserve to lose" since I certainly don't believe that either I or the base Democratic constituencies deserve to lose and to suffer from the D party's electoral incompetence and ideological incoherence, but -Sweet Zombie Jesus!- they do deserve to lose. No matter how hard the Repukes rape them they never wise up. They keep going into each battle letting the enemy strike at a time and place of his own choosing, and they keep missing the fact that a significant part of the electorate can't tell the difference between their weak-kneed style of politics and governmental incompetence. They let the Repukes hit first and call them crooks, hippies, and baby fuckers with the result that they spend most of their time just playing defense against ludicrous charges. And so these idiotic "independent" voters side with the Republicans as the "stronger" party. The Democrats could lose a fist fight with a blind one armed paraplegic.

16. Not surprising.
Most people are detached from politics and see the political parties as much the same. Probably because, at election time, they both try to be the same to catch the mythical "middle".
