So what do you do when someone comes into your house to rob you w/o a gun?
Do you give them anything they want or do you pick up something hard and beat the shit out of them no matter how big they are?

11. We have had criminals come into our house and rob us w/o a gun or knife and here we sit.
Are we going to let them have anything they want or are we going to do something about it?

actually i'm thinking about getting a taser. i'd really rather give the guy a jolt while waiting for the police to arrive, but i'm not going to sit back and let a criminal have his way.

we don't have that many people breaking into houses here while someone is home. they know that the person may be armed, so they think twice about it.

71. If you don't have a crime problem
it's because you live in an area that has plenty of police, above average education, community development, etc. It's not because anybody has a gun. Violent crime is generally highest in states with high gun ownership.

we have high gun ownership. yes i do live in a nice area. however, there have been break ins in the subdivision about 1/2 a mile from where we live while people were not home. the owner of the nail salon's house was broken into. she had almost $10,000 in cash. they took that, her computer and many other things. insurance did not cover much. she shouldn't have had that much cash around. BTW. she has 4 dogs who bark, but if no one was around to hear them, they're useless. i told her that she should have a security system. she's a single mom with 2 teenage girls. we have one. wouldn't live without it. if i'm home alone the alarm is on. hubby just went to bed and i turned it on. actually if someone were to come up here at night they would be nuts. there's only one way in and out and the road is so narrow that 2 cars cannot pass at the same time. it's pitch dark at night and at one point if you don't know your way around you could drive right off the mountain. there are coyotes, javelinas and rattlers. i won't even throw garbage out when it's dark.

there is some gun violence in the poorer neighborhoods -- mostly gang related. those guns are usually not registered. when we bought ours we had to have a background check (brady bill). it stopped many criminals from getting guns legally, but unfortunately people get them from other means.

we had a very sad case a few years ago. a teenage girl was outside talking on her cell phone with her friend (not in a poor neighborhood). someone -- could have been miles away fired a gun up in the air and she was hit by the stray bullet. she died.

upper middle class neighborhoods get robbed too. there is one area where people were not closing their windows at night. they were robbed while they slept. i never ever sleep with a window or door open even though it would be nice to have the fresh air. and like i said. anyone who would come up here at night would have to be nuts. i always say "sharon tate and her friends thought they were safe".

BTW. the subdivision near us has police protection. we're in the county so we would have to call the sheriff. they don't just ride up here to check things out. we're sort of isolated -- not many homes up here.

79. 2 teen-agers and $10,000 cash
What a combination.

You can list all the random violent acts you want, they don't indicate a need for gun ownership.

You did list the ONLY reason I think an individual needs a gun, and that's when you're in a rural setting where a cop can't get there within 20 minutes. Note the word "can't", which does not mean a city that just doesn't have enough cops on duty to answer all calls within 5 minutes.

I hope your gun is never the one stolen that kills a random child. But I suspect you wouldn't care. That's why guns from your neighborhood are stolen and become part of those "very sad cases" that you tsk tsk about, and then go buy yet another gun to contribute to the problem.

Instead of doing something constructive, like walking over to that neighborhood and seeing what you can do to help turn things around.

80. there are some things that
Edited on Sat Sep-20-08 11:59 PM by sweets
people will never agree on -- one of them is guns. i see it every time we have a thread about guns here.

there is no way the sheriff would be up here in 5 minutes (providing i could get to the phone to call). during the time it would take for him to get here, i could be raped or murdered or worse.

if you want to think that i don't care about other people, that's your choice. the thing is you don't know anything about me and yet you make judgments.

if you don't want a gun that's your choice. how about letting me and people like me make our choices without be judged as "uncaring people".

maybe we should have "pro choice" when it comes to guns -- the choice to own one or the choice to not own one.

it sounds like your judging the nail shop owner too. she has 2 great girls -- i've met them several times. their interests are school and getting good grades.

on edit: i hope you are never a victim of a violent crime. if you were you might wish that you had a gun, or maybe you would rather be a martyr. i think you would chose the latter.

75. The unelected leader of this country:
Kicked down the door of a neighbor's house.
Murdered the neighbor's sons. (Sure, they were rotten sonsofbitches, but that's their family business.)
Pulled the neighbor from a hole in the ground, where he had hoped to escape detection.
Hanged the neighbor in a grotesque mockery of justice.
Robbed the neighbor of all his goods.
Burned the neighbor's house to the ground.

And people cheered.

82. I don't know the law of every state. So I can't answer that, my
points were 2 fold.

1. setting up a hypothetical so that the person is already in my house stealing my stuff sets up a situation which is very low probability.
Its the same sort of argument used by Cheney and the NeoCons "isn't it ok to torture someone if their comrade is about to blow up your town with a suitcase nuke?"

The assumptions built into the hypothetical are a couple ten thousand times more fantastical, but in both cases fantastical. Neither is realistic based on demographics for the area I live.

So Fantastical hypotheticals deserve fantastical answers. In response I simply say, fantastically of course, that no one could ever get in my house to rob my stuff because I have attack geese and a killer rabbit. I don't have any assets. If they got in they'd get nothing, moreover, I have cancer and no insurance so I live with a death wish. They'd be doing me a favor...

2. You, I, and our posterity ARE going to be robbed by this crazy assed bailout of the financial institutions.
That is not a fantastical hypothetical but reality. It will be the largest theft from the most people in US history.

And there isn't a freaking thing you can do about it whether you believe in the right to protect yourself and your assets with a gun or not.
