C-Span Caller Perfectly Sums Up Political Factions In The US

A caller into C-Span's Washington Journal program succinctly summed up the three major political factions in the US this morning. I paraphrase: "Republicans are bullies, Democrats are chickens, and Independents don't have a clue what's going on". I might have got a word or two wrong but how much better could you put it?

Independents are usually liars who prescribe to one platform or another. Everytime I hear someone claim to be an independent they then spout talking points from one side or another at me.

If you don't mind me wondering for a moment I have to tell you something. In the last year or two I've got into the habit of thinking about the words I use. This doesn't happen all the time, just when I'm looking for the right word to capture a concept I want to convey accurately. I have an old dictionary that I've about worn out and in the process of using it I've learned an awful lot. Often I've found that by looking up the words I'm considering using and seeing what they really mean I've been able to expand my thought into areas I would have otherwise missed. Sometimes its a real eye opener. I am reminded of something a High-school teacher told my class decades ago; "a poet is a person who picks the precise word to express them self, often conveying more than one idea at once". Her thought stuck with me but didn't really sink in until I was in my 50's.

At any rate keep it up. If you see me misuse a word please chime in. I actually appreciate it.

English has so many words that I wonder if it is easier to coax out more shades of meaning in poetry in English than in other languages.

Any politician who can stand up in front of the taxpayers and say "I´m surprised about this development" should clean out their desk and leave the building and kiss their civil servant paycheck goodbye.
