"FUCK THAT-I'm NOT Voting-For A Blank Check-For Those Mother Fuckers" (Angry Dem Congressmember)

Yes, There Are Deeply Angry Democratic Members of Congress
by: Matt Stoller
Sun Sep 21, 2008 at 10:21

This email is from a lawmaker and it should give you a flavor for what's going on right now in Congress.

Paulsen and congressional Republicans, or the few that will actually vote for this (most will be unwilling to take responsibility for the consequences of their policies), have said that there can't be any "add ons," or addition provisions. Fuck that. I don't really want to trigger a world wide depression (that's not hyperbole, that's a distinct possibility), but I'm not voting for a blank check for $700 billion for those mother fuckers.

Nancy said she wanted to include the second "stimulus" package that the Bush Administration and congressional Republicans have blocked. I don't want to trade a $700 billion dollar giveaway to the most unsympathetic human beings on the planet for a few fucking bridges. I want reforms of the industry, and I want it to be as punitive as possible.

..........................

We may strip out all the gives to industry in the predatory mortgage lending bill that the House passed last November, which hasn't budged in the Senate, and include that in the bill. There are other ideas on the table but they are going to be tough to work out before next week.

....................

I'm open to other ideas, and I am looking for volunteers who want to hold the sons of bitches so I can beat the crap out of them.

24. I bet it is my congresswoman - Corrine Brown
She has the balls to say that. She has already said on the floor that we had a coup d'etat in 2000 and that Cheney gets a check every month from Halliburton for this Iraq war.

She has had her words stricken from the official record and has been reprimanded more than once for her truthful assessment of our country.

So I can hear her saying this. I can't wait to call her office tomorrow to get her take on this bailout.

Every single person here should be e-mailing like mad tonight. Follow that up with phone calls tomorrow. A deluge of correspondence at least lets the cowards in our own party that we are indeed watching. I don't really know if I can feel worse knowing that Schumer is my senator, and if Hillary has any spirit left, this is her chance to shine. I really can't see a down side for these two. It's not like they are threatened by opposition here in NY. I know their offices are tired of me and I'm probably on some kind of list there, but they will hear from me again anyway.

ABSOLUTELY NO. BLANK. CHECKS. for any bail out that taxpayers will be responsible for. I will not subject my 19-ye-old son's future to that. Oversight, oversight, oversight. Any notion that acts drafted in a plan which cannot, or will not, be subject to review by anyone, at anytime, is UNACCEPTABLE.

Done & Done

My letter to my congresscritters:

I am writing to implore you to do the right thing for your constituents (many of whom are losing their homes) and NOT support ANY blank check for Secretary Paulson or any other member of this or any other administration. Any solution to this crisis MUST include transparency, oversight, regulation and, above all, a mechanism to help the millions of Americans who are struggling as a result of the malfeasance of the banking industry's leaders. In my humble opinion, the bill being proposed by Secretary Paulson which contains no oversight or accountability would be the antithesis of a sane and rational solution to this crisis. We have seen what happens when we write blank checks to friends of the Bush Administration: we either get cheated out of our money or we get second rate work at 5 times the price. ENOUGH! We need to reach a solution to this crisis as soon as possible but we don't have to sell the American people down the river (again) to enrich fat cats whose ideologies have proven to be ridiculously and horribly bankrupt. Once again, I implore you to do the right thing and vote against any blank check for the banking industry fat cats. This is the seminal issue of this election season and if you want the support of Minnesotans, you should go to bat for the little guy on this one! Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

It was supposed to have come from a sign in Charles Colson's office during watergate, but is often attributed as a quote from Nixon.

16. The Congress had better not wimp out on this
I'd like to see every Congress person hold a joint press conference and tell every American that their entire future depends on this and they had better drop everything and come personally to Washington, by the tens of millions, and surround the Capitol building to make sure their interests are preserved here. If e-mails, faxes, letters, and phone calls don't get the attention of the scalawags who support another Bush blank check, maybe millions of angry people would.

101. Millions of angry workers that suddenly up'd their exemptions
on their w4 form, and withheld their taxes would really get their attention. Max your deductions, and put your income tax in an escrow account. Personally, I'm not contributing to the welfare of these pricks. They don't give a fiscal shit about me or my well being. They only care that I make my fucking payments on time, and that the long slow rape via shitty interest rates work to their advantage. Fuck them all. We should all simply refuse to bail them out. It would take an organized effort, but it would be a thing of beauty.

77. Time was, we never negotiated with terrorists.
Now, look at the spineless Congress, cowering before those seeking a Federal bailout for their crooked ways.

I'd call their bluff. The gutless wonders? They'll cave by the end of the week on everything sensible.

None of these banks or insurance companies would be "too big to fail" if anti-trust laws hadn't been repealed, rewritten, and ignored, over the past thirty years.

Break up all the monopolies NOW! Not just financial companies, also industrial, and especially media conglomerates.

The whole country and democracy itself will benefit from this.

The government is and should be in a mad dash to pass this Republican power and money grab, and we should support that, because anything else would be a mad dash, and a mad dash would be a bad thing....er....um.

So mad dashes are OK when they benefit the wealthy and powerful, but the rest of us are not even permitted to speak, because that would be a mad dash, and would do some great harm somehow?

Of course the New Deal was not cooked up in two days. But it started with people talking just the way that they are talking here - the people you are scolding and trying to discourage - and would never have happened had people heeded those with the view you are taking here now. Of course.

Interesting technique on your part. The administration is in a mad dash to pass a cure that may well be worse than the disease, and so you say that those who point that out are the ones in a mad dash, and that their criticism of the administration's plan is a cure worse than the disease.

HAVA, NCLB, IWR, the Patriot Act, the Bankruptcy bill, the Military Commissions Act... we have had quite a few "mad dashes," haven't we though? And those "cures" all turned out to be much worse than the "disease."

But you would have it that it is the critics of those bad cures and mad dashes who are actually the ones responsible for mad dashes and bad cures?

75. Go to Bloomberg
The deal is that whatever Paulsen does cannot be reviewed by the Courts, he is to be given free rein and a revolving account probably for his friends ,,, etc.

To quote a friend: Worse than that--the $700 billion is a rolling amount--like a revolving charge card in reverse. They can have as much as $700 billion in assets based on what they paid for them, rather than what they're worth. So, they buy $700 billion worth of crap at premium prices, sell it for crap prices, and then buy more crap at premium prices. Plus, Paulson gets to pick which private firms manage the accounts and what fees are paid to them. It's a giant swindle.

If the American People with their Representation fail to arrest all crooks involved with this scam that has been going on for who knows how long, the Dollar and all Credibility will go down the tubes. All Foreign Investors will pull out of the American Market and your 401k's will be worthless. It needs to happen now. A statement that we intend to get to the bottom of what has happened and that all crooks will be jailed. Without that no amount of money for bailouts or loans will do anything.

110. Just sent letters off to my members of congress
I am writing to express my deep hope that the pending banking bailout will NOT be a blank check to the banking industry that got us into this crisis.

I am strongly in favor of capping CEO pay - they should not get a golden parachute while their employees and stockholders pay.

Further, there needs to be complete transparency in the review process. As a taxpayer, I want to know how my hard earned money is being spent on this bailout.

Any plan that does not include these provisions is unacceptable.

This in one of those moments where the Democrats need to stand strong and stand united for the middle class and for the future of America.

We gave the Bush administration a blank check on the Iraq war - please don't give them a blank check on our economy.

113. This was great to read. I say, give 'em 250B, strip out all the junk, and Congress signs the checks.
Let these companies scramble.

I know that's a very simplistic view, but whatever the complicated version would be, I say boil it down to:

They want 700B; they get 250B. Let them scramble and make it work. If they're asking for 700B, they probably only need 100B anyway.

Strip out everything that will let the fat cats go to sleep with smiles on their faces and a belly full of mignon and scotch.

Paulson and Bernanke pooh-poohed this oncoming disaster for at least a year while, the same way Bush sat comatose when being told about the approach of Hurricane Katrina. Now Paulson wants $700B in his pocket to spend any way he wants? Is he nuts? No. Co-signers, (maybe the majority leaders and chairmen of the finance committees) should be required in order for him to spend one dime.

Same rhetoric used, but instead of "Don't read it, don't dare oppose it, must hurry and pass it NOW or we'll be attacked again and we'll all die!"

it's

"Don't read it, don't oppose it, must hurry or and pass it NOW or the economy will collapse and we'll all die!"

and then
(Insert obligatory *Democrats Hate America* meme here)

We've been here before! We can't allow them to push this through as it is.
