Something I remember Paulson saying last week on NPR.
As NPR was reporting on the economic crisis, they mentioned that Treasury Secretary Paulson didn't think "regulation alone was enough".

They then played a tape ofPaulson saying that we need a "balance of regulation and market discipline".

My first thought was... isn't the only way to guarantee "market discipline" through regulation?

We need quick legislation to get us through this crisis before it becomes a global meltdown. I like Obama's points of what is necessary. I hope the Dems and Repukes can work together to do something quickly. I don't expect all of Obama's points to get in the first piece, maybe they can get it all in later.

But I have a sinking feeling that if the Repukes think they can blame it on the Dem's, they'd cut their own throats. Hell, many of them do it on a regular basis already.

So, please DU, if we have to compromise to get something done - don't get all flaky. We have to DO something, QUICK!

1. I disagree with rushed legislation.
The Patriot Act was rushed. The Iraq War Resolution was rushed.

I want Congress to wait for the next president to provide leadership on the economy and then to carefully consider the next president's proposal.

2. There is a difference between "rushed" legislation and
legislation done quickly. The Patriot Act is not a fair example. It was full-blown and waiting in somebody's box for a long time. I'm not a LIHOP or MIHOP person, but someone had written the Patriot Act a long time before and were just waiting for the opportunity to use it.

There are some things that need to be done quickly. Other aspects can be done later, after much debate. But the economy is about to fall over into the abyss and so something MUST be done ASAP - even if it's just a tactic to buy more time.

I'm not a fan of "rushed" legislation either. But this requires quick action. If we had a President I trusted, I would say give him some lattitude to make some quick decisions. But....

3. With the billions given to Bush to rebuild Iraq and New Orleans...
...we didn't get positive results.

I don't know that we will get positive results for the economy by giving Bush $700 billion to buy financial products.

I would rather wait until there is a new president.

4. I agree with you. All those harmful things were passed in a hurry without
a second thought and questioning. Everything was argued that if it's not passed will harm us! This logic is not acceptable. This is our children's future, let's think about it.

5. We CAN'T wait!
Sorry to get all "doom and gloom", but we have AT MOST a week.

This is the reality. Don't shoot the messenger. Repukes put us in this mess. But we have at the most a week to do something to turn it around - or at least do something to allow our economy to simply SURVIVE ntil the election. Much less until the Inauguration.

TIME.IS.OUT.

"The next president" will be TOO LATE! Unless our next president Obama leads Congress to take action NOW.

Look, I'm 52 years old. I'm a Daoist. I'm all for patience, normally. Wu Wei. Action through non-action. But I also recognize when the time for patience is gone and action is required. It's time to act. NOW.
